FIFA Awards: Ronaldo, Modric, Salah nominated but Messi snubbed

Ronaldo made the surprise switch to Turin after nine successful years at Real Madrid for a reported €100m (£88.3m) in July.

However, something odd has occurred in 2018, with the notable name of Messi missing off the shortlist for the Federation Internationale de Football Association best player of the year.

His competitors, Ronaldo and Modric, won the Champions league together with Real Madrid.

It has nearly become routine to see names such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi fight for the honour to be named best player on the planet.

Egypt forward Mohamed Salah scored 44 goals as Liverpool reached the Champions League final, losing to Real.

There was some consolation as Messi was name as one of the nominees for the Puskas award with his stunning strike for Argentina against Nigeria during this summer's World Cup.

"They're also a team that never give up".

He was also instrumental in Croatia's campaign, taking them to the finale of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation.

The Egyptian led Liverpool to the Champions League final before cruelly suffering an injury early on in Kiev against Madrid that also limited his participation at the World Cup.

Salah's strike in last December's Merseyside derby also makes the shortlist, with FIFA.com users voting for the victor. Norway's Ada Hegerberg (Olympique Lyonnais) and Germany's Dzsenifer Maroszan (Olympique Lyonnais) were announced as the other two finalists for the pinnacle award. Marta has won it on five occasions.

Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, backed by financial powerhouses, could potentially afford to sign the Argentina worldwide but Messi has quashed any idea he could leave the Nou Camp.

The Best FIFA Goalkeeper Award will be contested between a trio who shone in Russian Federation, namely Belgium's Thibaut Courtois, France's Hugo Lloris and Denmark's Kasper Schmeichel.
