Obama: McCain called on America to rise above 'mean and petty' politics

McCain's body, which had lain in state at the U.S. Capitol, arrived at the Washington National Cathedral after his motorcade first stopped at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, where his wife, Cindy McCain, laid a wreath to honor those who died in the war.

But it was Meghan McCain's emotional remarks that most bluntly rebuked Trump, who had mocked her father for getting captured in Vietnam.

"We gather here to mourn the passing of American greatness", she said. "In a way, it's the last great gift that John McCain gave America".

Trump had spent parts of the morning before McCain's funeral tweeting his anger about the investigation into his campaign's ties with Russian Federation during the 2016 election and highlighting quotes from a mutual critic of the FBI and Justice Department.

Mr McCain was a decorated veteran who was held for more than five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam where he refused early release.

McCain was honored at the Washington National Cathedral, before his final resting place at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. "To the face of those in authority, John would insist, 'We are better than this".

At the pulpit of the spectacular cathedral, with Trump's daughter Ivanka in the audience, McCain's daughter delivered a broadside against the uninvited president.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who was McCain's running mate in the 2008 presidential election was not invited to any of the memorial services.

Eulogizers, citing McCain's honor, courage, patriotic service, obstinacy, humor, reverence for freedom and contempt for bullies, presented the Arizona Republican as the personification of America itself.

At the memorial service on Saturday in Washington, D.C., Bush said during his eulogy that the late senator "detested the abuse of power and could not abide bigots and swaggering despots".

The carefully choreographed service at the Washington National Cathedral was the culmination of a week of public memorials for the Arizona lawmaker, who died August 25 at age 81.

"John's voice will always come as a whisper over our shoulder", Bush said.

One of McCain's closest political friends, former Connecticut Sen.

Former Sen. Joe Lieberman recalled a joke McCain liked to tell over and over again.

Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush also spoke during the service, and Bill Clinton attended it. "He called us to be better than that", he added.

Friends, family and former political rivals saluted the late Sen. He was also a devoted father who would carry her to bed as a little girl, kiss her skinned knee, and sometimes take her out of school to attend public town hall events. "And even that small number still have the opportunity, as long as they draw breath, to live up to the example of John McCain". "Sounds corny. 'We hold these truths self-evident, that all men are created equal, endowed by their creator with certain rights.' To John, those words had meaning, as they have for every great patriot who's ever served this country".

Others who were seen at the cathedral included chief of staff John Kelly, Secretary of Defense James Mattis and the Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats.

"Back", McCain wrote on the last page of his recent memoir, "where it began".
