Eight former champs headline Day 1 of the US Open

Defending champion Rafa Nadal has advanced to the second round of the US Open after fellow Spaniard David Ferrer retired during the second set of their night match due to a calf injury.

Nadal, the defending champion in NY, was leading the first-round match 6-3 3-4 when Ferrer retired due to a suspected calf injury.

Ferrer, whose decision to retire brings the curtain down on his final appearance at a Grand Slam, said he had taken an injection before the match but was in obvious discomfort and need treatment courtside before he chose to quit.

"I have great memories of this tournament and I am just sorry that I couldn't finish it tonight", Ferrer said. The 2016 champion won his eighth straight match at the US Open beating Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-2, 7-5.

Former world number one Murray marked his first Grand Slam tournament in 14 months with a 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 win over Australia's James Duckworth.

Earlier this season at Wimbledon, the Swiss recovered from a set down to eliminate Dimitrov 1-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-4.

"It's about trying to win a 24th Grand Slam to equal Court - that's the number she cares about".

Halep was beaten 6-2, 6-4 by 44th-ranked Kaia Kanepi of Estonia on Monday in a match that was stunningly lopsided and lasted all of 76 minutes.

Roger Federer improved to 18-0 in first-round matches at the U.S. Open and took one step toward a potential quarterfinal showdown against Novak Djokovic.

Having spent what feels like forever battling a hip injury, Andy Murray made his triumphant return to Grand Slam competition on Monday.

Nadal, who like his opponent was sweating profusely in the oppressively humid conditions, paid tribute to Ferrer.

Other notables: Defending champion Sloane Stephens will take on 21-year-old Ukranian Anhelina Kalinina on Arthur Ashe, while Venus Williams and Juan Martin del Potro will go up against Italy's Camila Giorgi and America's Denis Kudla, respectively.

It's only Day 3 of the final Grand Slam of the year, but new records have been set, hearts have been broken and a new extreme heat policy is in place. I'm not the only one, a lot of the players struggled. "We've shared incredible moments together. and he's one of the greatest players our country has ever had".

After winning the US Open in 2016 Wawrinka was unable to defend his title a year ago after two surgeries on his left knee.

Auger-Aliassime, making his slam debut after coming through qualifying, had needed a medical timeout for an irregular heartbeat in the third set.

Their combined age made this the youngest U.S. Open men's match since 2006, when Novak Djokovic, 19, beat Donald Young, 17.

Young American Frances Tiafoe finally has his first U.S. Open win on his fourth try - and he eliminated a seeded player, to boot.

It was the first match at the rebuilt Louis Armstrong Stadium.

"It's always about the nerves", said Halep, who was beaten in the first round in NY by five-time major champion Maria Sharapova in 2017.
