Google responds to Trump’s tweet-rage: We didn’t rig search against you!

The president said in a pre-dawn tweet that included a typo that a search for "Trump News" on Google "shows only the viewing/reporting of Fake New Media".

"They have it RIGGED, for me & others", he said, blaming Google, part of Alphabet Inc., for what he said was risky action that promoted mainstream media outlets such as CNN and suppressed conservative political voices. When you consider that Trump's deemed every non-Fox News outlet to be "Fake News" - including the sites for CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, the New York Times, and the Washington Post - then, sure, this would fit his narrative.

In a flurry of tweets sent earlier today, the US President claimed the alleged bias of Google's search results was "very dangerous" and potentially illegal.

US President Donald Trump says Google's search engine has been hiding "fair media" coverage of him and that he would address the situation.

And in an ominous warning he suggested the company was acting illegally and vowed to take action to "address" this "very serious situation".

That 96 percent figure came directly from PJ Media's supervising editor, Paula Bolyard. Popular news sites such as CNN.com and NYTimes.com, which many readers link to, can appear higher in searches based on such factors.

"We're just gonna do some investigations, some analysis, that's what we do", he said.

"Illegal?" he speculated, going on to accuse Google of "controlling what we can & cannot see". Soon enough, stories about Trump's attack on the tech giant rose to the top of Google search results.

"Any effort by Trump to "fix" search engine results will violate the First Amendment". One certainly can-and should-view Trump's tweets as part of a growing chorus of calls for Washington to regulate tech and social media, as Elizabeth Nolan Brown wrote this morning. We have also found that Google often suggests positive search terms for Mrs. Clinton even when such terms are almost invisible in Trends.

Google issued a statement in response, saying search was "not used to set a political agenda and we don't bias our results toward any political ideology".

"Google's news algorithm is optimised for actuality and proximity of an event but it is generally not optimised to look for political orientation", she said. In advance of that hearing, Dorsey has been on a media tour, discussing a wide range of topics (including perceptions of bias) with mainstream and conservative news outlets.

The Associated Press, which boasts of being the world's oldest and largest newsgathering organization, complained that Trump "lashed out" at Google over its suppression of conservative voices, arguing the president "cited no evidence".
