Iran Urges UN Court To Halt 'Economic Aggression' By U.S.

Speaking on August 27 at the start of four days of hearings, a lawyer representing Iran, Mohsen Mohebi, told the court in The Hague that the US sanctions violate terms of the 1955 treaty signed by the United States and Iran.

Iran is going to the United Nations' highest court in a bid to.

Mr Trump, who took office a year ago, called it a "horrible one-sided deal" that "failed to achieve the fundamental objective of blocking all paths to a Iranian nuclear bomb".

Sanctions had been lifted under a 2015 multilateral agreement in return for Iran committing not to pursue nuclear weapons.

"The United States is publicly propagating a policy meant to damage as severely as possible Iran's economy and Iranian nationals and companies", Mohebi told the court.

In November, a second batch of potentially more damaging sanctions will be reimposed on Iran's oil and shipping sectors as well as its central bank.

Iran filed the case with the International Court of Justice in July, claiming that sanctions the Trump administration imposed on May 8 breach a 1955 bilateral agreement known as the Treaty of Amity that regulates economic and consular ties between the two countries. "The proceedings instituted by Iran are a misuse of the court", said Pompeo.

America is waging a psychological war against Iran and its business partners, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Sunday, according to the Tasnim news agency.

Trump said the sanctions would turn up the financial pressure on Tehran to come to a "comprehensive and lasting solution" regarding its activities such as its "ballistic missile program and its support for terrorism".

President Donald Trump said in May that he would pull the US out of a 2015 agreement over Iran's nuclear program and would re-impose sanctions on Tehran.

The oral arguments, essentially a request by Iran for a provisional ruling, will last for four days, with a decision to follow within a month.

The ICJ president Abdulqawi Yusuf heads a 15-judge panel hearing Iran's case. A final decision could take years.

Tehran says that the new sanctions are already hurting its economy.

Iran's currency the rial has lost around half its value since April.

Worldwide companies including French oil firm Total and Germany's Siemens have suspended operations in Iran since Trump announced the USA withdrawal in May.

Air France will halt flights from Paris to Tehran from September 18 because of "the line's weak performance", a spokesman for the airline said. The British carrier added however that the decision was unrelated to the fresh sanctions.

Washington's lawyers will present their case on Tuesday.

The ICJ is the United Nations tribunal for resolving worldwide disputes.

United States lawyers will reportedly claim that the friendship treaty signed before the Islamic Revolution in 1979 is no longer valid and that the sanctions Washington has levied against Tehran, do not violate it anyway. Its rulings are binding, but it has no power to enforce them and on rare occasions they have been ignored by some countries, including the United States.
