NYU Makes Tuition Free For All Medical Students

It says it is now the only top 10 U.S. medical school to offer such help.

To be sure, applications to medical schools exceed the available seats-the admission rate was just over 41 percent in the most recent application cycle.

The medical school at NYU, a private university, is ranked third in the U.S., and tied with Stanford University in Stanford, California, according to U.S. News & World Report. That's a major deterrent for qualified premedical students considering a medical degree. While that figure includes estimated shortages for both specialists and general practitioners, the NYU program could theoretically reduce the burden of entry to either and, the hope goes, free up would-be doctors to pursue the careers they want to begin with. According to the Association of American medical colleges, only in 2017 70% of graduates of medical faculty, owed banks approximately $191 thousand. However, she said some students feel pressure to to only pursue high-paying medical jobs due to their debt. By providing tuition-free medical education, NYU School of Medicine is leaving students to pay only for housing, fees and the cost of living.

For the coming school year, those scholarships will equal over $55,000 per student.

FBN's Cheryl Casone on some colleges now asking students for a percentage of their future salary to cover the cost of tuition.

"This decision recognizes a moral imperative that must be addressed, as institutions place an increasing debt burden on young people who aspire to become physicians", Dr. Robert Grossman, dean of NYU's school of medicine, said in a statement. By liberating both prospective and present medical students from the shackles of educational debt, a medical school can alter the topography of American health care by helping increase diversity in the provider population, improve access to care by minority patients, resolve the deficit of primary care physicians, and empower the battle against burnout.

Why this step? The university points to the overwhelming debt students accrue, which drives them to choose highly paid specialties over those in need of more graduates like family practice, pediatrics, and research.

NYU said on Thursday that it hopes other institutions will follow in its path, as it pursues "a full retrofitting of the pipeline that trains and finances" future doctors.

This historic initiative was made possible by more than 2,500 supporters, including trustees, alumni, and friends. "That's too late if we wish to expand the pipeline to bring forth the broadest, most-talented group of students, and to give them the financial freedom to choose medicine over other careers".
