Trump Expects to Revoke DOJ Official's Security Clearance

"I know that I've gotten tremendous response from having done that because security clearances are very important to me - very, very important", Trump said in a brief session with reporters on the White House lawn. Brennan, who served under President Barack Obama and has become a vocal Trump critic, called Trump's claims that he did not collude with Russian Federation "hogwash".

The signees included seven former CIA directors, six former CIA deputy directors and two former national intelligence directors, James Clapper and retired Navy Adm. Denny Blair.

"You don't have to agree with what John Brennan says (and, again, not all of us do) to agree with his right to say it, subject to his obligation to protect classified information", it continues.

Former CIA directors and other top national security officials are typically allowed to keep their clearances, at least for some period. "In many cases, I've given him a bigger voice". Many people don't even know who he is, and now he's a bigger voice, and that's okay with me, because I like taking on voices like that.

But Republicans, including some who've been critical of Mr. Trump, said Mr. Brennan has crossed lines with his vicious criticism of the new president.

Brennan has repeatedly clashed with Trump on Twitter and on television, calling Trump's failure to denounce Russian interference in US elections at a recent summit with Vladimir Putin "nothing short of treasonous". "Revoking the security clearance of former Central Intelligence Agency chief is nothing but a blatant attempt to silence a critic, to take away his right to free speech, to purge him". "For him to be in the Justice Department and doing what he did, that is a disgrace".

Mr. Ohr's wife, Nellie Ohr, worked for Fusion GPS, the company paid by Democrats to dig up dirt on Mr. Trump, including hiring Christopher Steele, the former British spy who wrote the controversial dossier.

Democrats accused the president of trying to punish his critics. On Tuesday, Brennan lambasted Trump's personal character after he derided former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman as a "dog".

According to reports Thursday, Bruce Ohr stands to lose his job at the department if the president revokes his security clearance. "Beyond that, this action is quite clearly a signal to the former and current officials", the statement said. Several of them have said they no longer have clearances.

Burr says if it is political conjecture, Trump has full authority to pull Brennan's clearance.

After the White House said Brennan - a notable Trump critic - had been stripped of clearance due to his "erratic" behavior, Trump admitted it was because of his criticism and comments on the Trump campaign's ties with Russian Federation.
