Australia senate appoints first Muslim woman amid race row

Queensland senator Fraser Anning has called for a final solution to immigration, a term used by the Nazis.

Later on Wednesday Hanson introduced her private member's bill "to give voters a say on whether Australia's immigration levels are too high by casting a vote at the next general election".

Hanson rounded on senators who listened to Anning's speech without walking out in condemnation, accusing them of being "gutless" for re-entering the Senate on Wednesday to criticise him after the public mood turned.

"I think the safest thing for Australia is that we don't have any more of them [Muslims] coming into the place".

She claimed it was written by a sacked staffer to Malcolm Roberts - the former One Nation senator replaced by Senator Anning - and was "straight from the Goebbels handbook for the Nazi Germany".

"I am appalled by Fraser Anning's speech", she said.

The embattled Queensland representative was originally elected as a replacement for a senator from Pauline Hanson's nationalist One Nation party, but chose to sit as an independent before switching his allegiance to Katter in June this year. "Where first-generation Australians can join First Australians and those Australians whose families have lived here for more than 100 years and all work together to make our great country an even better country".

The non-apology was followed up with an appearance on Sydney's 2GB Radio, where he told host Alan Jones that Muslim immigration needed to end because some of the immigrants could be terrorists. Mr Anning said he did not need to apologise.

"It has connotations and meanings to history which it are deeply offensive to right-thinking people, not only in Australia but across the world".

Anning has remained defiant and unapologetic, and claims his words were taken out of context. It culminated in what the Nazis called the "Final Solution of the Jewish Question in Europe", in which six million Jews were murdered.

In one of the most divisive speeches seen in parliament since 1996 when far-right politician Pauline Hanson declared incorrectly that Australia was being swamped by Asians, Senator Fraser Anning on Tuesday called for a national vote on whether to ban Muslim migration.

He said his party was completely "pro-Jewish" and seeks to defend Jews from the Muslim "persecutors" allowed to immigrate from Middle East countries.

The Greens called on Mr Katter to expel the Queenslander from his party, with leader Richard Di Natale calling Senator Anning "a myopic red-neck reaching out from another time to another people".

In his maiden speech in Parliament yesterday, Anning alleged that Muslims were responsible for acts of terror and crime and were dependant on welfare.

"If you have a jar of jelly beans and three of them are poisonous, you're not going to try any of them", he said. "We should condemn, as we have, racism and discrimination of the kind so regrettably, so shamefully expressed by senator Anning".

Guardian Australia contacted Anning and Howard for comment.
