Trump condemns racism, year after Charlottesville

Students and activists are rallying Saturday evening at the University of Virginia's campus in Charlottesville to mark the one-year anniversary of the Virginia White Nationalist Rally.

Besides some verbal confrontations between riot police and demonstrators, a rally in Charlottesville marking the anniversary of last year's deadly clash between right- and left-wing activists passed without any major incident.

Maurice Cook, a DC-based organiser and cofounder of the March for Racial Justice group, agreed, telling Al Jazeera that Sunday's counterprotest "is an opportunity for us to come together, recruit and do the structural work that we are charged to do to dismantle the impact of white supremacy in our country".

"Peace to ALL Americans!" he tweeted. Heyer was killed when a white supremacist rammed his auto into a crowd of counter-protesters during the riot.

The president's tweet comes ahead of planned events to mark the one-year anniversary August 12 of the deadly "Unite the Right" rally, an event where protesters gathered, some in opposition to the removal of Confederate statues, others in support of white supremacy.

The president infamously blamed protesters "on many sides" for the conflict instead of specifically criticizing the racist sentiment that spurred the tragedy.

White supremacists who marched and attacked counter-protesters in Charlottesville a year ago continue to be publicly identified.

Earlier this week, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and the city of Charlottesville both declared states of emergency for events in and around Charlottesville and Washington, D.C. The statue and the park in which it's located were the center of last year's Unite the Right rally.

Saturday marked the anniversary of a night march by torch-toting white supremacists through the University of Virginia's campus a day ahead of a larger rally in Charlottesville's downtown.

"Nothing would excite us any better than for this to be noneventful and folks to go home and it be a peaceful weekend for all", Settle said.

Specifically addressing those who were attacked during the march, Ryan said, "I am sorry".

Mr. Trump faced bipartisan criticism for his response in the aftermath of the unrest past year.

"The security looks good, everything looks in place", Thurston Brock, who lived outside of Charlottesville in Barboursville, said.

When asked by Cooper whether she had seen any change in Trump's views on what happened in Charlottesville, or on race issues in America, Bro said, "I have other things to do than to worry about what he's doing". The city closed downtown streets and public parks and restricted access to a downtown "security area", where visitors were prohibited from wearing masks or carrying certain items, including skateboards, catapults, glass bottles, bats and knives.

"'All types.' 'Both sides.' Continuing to advance a narrative of moral equivalency between racists and those opposed to racism, so as not to tick of his white supremacist supporters", Sherrilyn Ifill, president of the NAACP's Legal Defense and Educational Fund, posted on Twitter.

With many commenters noting her father defended "both sides" at the time, Ivanka got an earful for saying too little, too late.
