Shhh: Harley-Davidson confirms 'twist and go' electric motorcycle for 2019

Smaller bikes, electric engines and urban storefronts: Harley-Davidson, we hardly knew you.

To further expand its market Harley will also introduce a new modular 500cc-1250cc middleweight platform motorcycles that span three distinct product spaces and four displacements.

Harley will also launch its first electric motorcycle called LiveWire in 2019, with additional models to follow through 2022, it said.

The company said it expects to spend $675 million-to-$825 million on these initiatives and expects the new plan to generate more than $1 billion of incremental annual revenue in 2022 as compared to 2017.

To appeal to this growing market, the company said it will develop smaller bikes with 250 to 500 cubic-centimetre engines created to be more accessible in those regions.

Meanwhile, the company will continue its development in the Touring and Cruiser segment to bring "improved and more technologically-advanced" products into the market.

Harley-Davidson's plans are expected to intensify competition for Eicher Motors Ltd's Royal Enfield, which is a segment leader and has nearly no competition as yet in the domestic market. The move comes as part of Harley's 2022-centric "More Roads to Harley-Davidson" plan, which aims at getting more people into the company's fold, especially from global markets.

US-based firm Harley-Davidson plans to put a brake on Royal Enfield's plans with its strategic move to come out with motorcycles in the small and mid-sized segment.

The company isn't exactly leaving the land of fossil fuels behind though - out of 100 new bikes planned for release in the near future, the LiveWire plus two more affordable models to be released in 2021-22 are planned. The electric motorcycle market is still relatively dormant, and Harley-Davidson says it plans to take a leadership role, especially from a design perspective starting with the LiveWire.

At present, Harley has 750cc as its smallest bike in India. "It's risky to think that motorcyclists aren't open-minded about other products and other brands", Levatich said.

Levatich acknowledged "unfortunate attention" after the company announced it would increase production in foreign countries, following retaliatory European Union tariffs prompted by tariff threats of President Donald Trump. But they're typically bought by older riders.

This "beginner" H-D will be produced through a planned strategic alliance with a manufacturer in Asia.

United States sales slid 6.4 per cent in the most recent quarter, and they're down 8.7 per cent at the halfway point of the year.
