Gunman takes hostages and kills woman in Los Angeles Trader Joe's

A suspect wanted in connection with a shooting was barricaded inside a supermarket in the USA city of Los Angeles on Saturday, police said, in what U.S. media reported was a possible hostage situation.

After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in a 2015 Toyota Camry and was later spotted by police in Hollywood.

The man crashed the auto and ran into the Silver Lake Trader Joe's, taking dozens of people hostage.

Atkins, who has two daughters, wound up shooting his girlfriend as well before forcing her into a vehicle and kidnapping her, cops said. The pursuit ended with the vehicle crashing into a light post outside the Trader Joe's in the Silver Lake neighborhood.

Atkin's grandmother was left in critical condition in the earlier attack on Saturday, police said.

At least one officer is believed to have returned fire, Montgomery said. Police were still trying to determine whether there are any hostages inside the store.

The suspect walked out of the Trader Joe's in the city's Silver Lake neighbourhood with a cluster of hostages Saturday afternoon (Sunday NZT) and was immediately surrounded by officers.

A 12-year-old boy, a 41-year-old woman, a 70- year-old woman and an 81-year-old woman were all hospitalized with minor injuries and listed in fair condition, she said. SWAT teams also arrived on the scene as the news of the incident gathered steam in the media.

Employees and customers inside scrambled for cover, they said later.

People frantically tried to flee from the store and some were seen climbing through windows while others darted through the back door.

Trader Joe's said the store - known by customers as a neighborhood hangout with great customer service - would remain closed for the foreseeable future to give their employees time to process and grieve.

The victim's brother identified her. Eldorado worked at Trader Joe's for four to five years, Albert Corado said. At about the same time, other officers went into the store and rushed out Kolhes and others near him.

Officer Drake Madison, a police spokesman, says 28-year-old Gene Evin Atkins was booked Sunday and being held on $2 million bail.

The incident injected chaos - and scores of police and fire vehicles - into the busy commercial area of shops and apartment buildings.

A man who was fleeing from officers crashed his vehicle, a 2015 Toyota Camry, outside of the supermarket and ran inside it, according to United States media.

Then Kohles heard two shots.

A young woman inside or near Trader Joe's was shot and killed by the suspect, police said.

Police escort a group of people near the Trader Joe's supermarket in Los Angeles on Saturday, July 21, 2018.

"The bullets were flying everywhere through the front of the store and across the parking lot", he said.

The gunfire shattered the glass doors and the gunman ran inside and "down the middle aisle", Kohles said. President Donald Trump confirmed LAPD is working with federal law enforcement.

Devin Field, a man who said he was walking into the store when the incident unfolded, described his experience in a series of tweets. He grabbed a folding ladder and tossed it out a window, helping his colleagues escape to safety, he told KNBC-TV.
