How much Trump Supreme Court justice pick Brett Kavanaugh could make

Democrats on Wednesday were reorienting their uphill push to block U.S. Senate confirmation of President Donald Trump's nominee to the Supreme Court, moving healthcare to the center of their strategy and putting less emphasis on abortion rights.

If confirmed, Kavanaugh would receive a raise of nearly 16% from his current, $220,600-per-year salary for his role as a circuit judge. As a young lawyer, he clerked for Justice Kennedy. "Critics on the Right have pointed out that while Kavanaugh is undoubtedly brilliant and conservative, he seems to be something of a judicial politician".

Troy Covington, counsel at Bloom Parham and a legal expert, spoke to Business Insider about what issues will come up in Kavanaugh's confirmation and how the judge could influence the court.

Kavanaugh: "On the question of Roe v. Wade, if confirmed to the DC Circuit, I would follow Roe v. Wade faithfully and fully". On Monday, she sounded skeptical of Kavanaugh: "He clearly is qualified for the job, but there are other issues involving judicial temperament and his judicial philosophy that also will play into my decision".

Do you think Kavanaugh is a good pick?

Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP, told Al Jazeera that his organisation's immediate call of action would be to "have its members across the USA express their views to senators in their states and urge them to oppose this nomination".

The Republicans in the Senate want desperately for Kavanaugh to be confirmed before the midterm elections in November-where it is possible that the balance of power in Congress will be altered -and so the pressure will be on to move as quickly as possible.

"No investigation of a president!" Will he safeguard ALL Americans' civil rights?

"Kavanaugh is perceived by many analysts to be less staunchly conservative than other judges on President [Donald] Trump's short list", he added.

And in case you're wondering, no, he doesn't support the constitutional mandate for separating church and state. This would be risky for many Americans, but especially the disability community, which has seen expanded access to care under this legislation.

Remember: This is precisely what McConnell flagged for Trump as a potential problem with Kavanaugh's nomination: Never that he wasn't qualified, but that his extensive time in government service, and the documents that come with it, cannot only lead to possible surprises and also give Democrats grounds - legitimate or not - to delay consideration of the nomination.

Meanwhile, the NRA is thrilled about the nomination of a judge widely perceived as pro-gun rights.

I think something is wrong in not just the confirmation process for our court but for lower courts more generally.

Durbin said Kavanaugh "consistently favors big business and undermines protections for consumers, workers, women, and the environment".

Trying to tell how Kavanaugh would rule in future cases is hard. But for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell - whose primary goal is to lock in all 50 present Republicans - Collins and Murkowski certainly haven't raised any significant red flags yet.

He said his committee will examine the 300 cases Kavanaugh has made decisions in before bringing the nomination to a vote in the full Senate.

The confirmation marathon is expected to drag on for months, and no date has yet been set for hearings.

Trump's opposition fears Kavanaugh's nomination is self-serving because he is unlikely to favor criminal prosecution against Trump for alleged collusion with Russian Federation.
