Donald Trump gifts Kim Jong-un with Elton John ‘Rocket Man’ CD

Pompeo is in North Korea for two days to discuss the return of the remains of US soldiers who were killed in the Korean War in the 1950s and dismantlement of a North Korean missile engine test site. Pompeo joked once the meeting started that if he comes again after this, his third trip to North Korea this year, he will have to start paying taxes.

But Nauert and other officials said they did not know anything about such a gift, and Pompeo himself laughed off the reports when asked by reporters. Trump replied, "I had a very good feeling about him from the standpoint - I shook his hand".

Neither the White House nor the Department of State immediately responded to requests for comments.

Members of the press pool accompanying Pompeo reported that the Secretary of State sat down with Kim Yong Chol, Choe Kang Il, who serves as deputy director general for North American affairs at the DPRK foreign ministry, and other officials mid-afternoon local time. I really believe that he sees a different future for North Korea.

The administration has been pushing back on reports that it is softening its demands of North Korea, with Nauert saying in a statement Thursday, "Nothing could be further from the truth".

After his talks with North Korea, Mr Pompeo is due to fly on to Tokyo to brief his Japanese and South Korean counterparts.

Some officials in the State and Defense Departments and in US intelligence agencies are anxious that Trump has put himself at a disadvantage by overstating the results of the Singapore summit.

It says pressure will remain until North Korea denuclearizes, but in statements this week, it redefined the US goal as "the final, fully verified denuclearization" of the country.

President Donald Trump used to taunt North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un as "Little Rocket Man" for his frequent missile tests. Located a short drive from the massive mausoleum where North Korea's former leader Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il lie in state, the guesthouse is part of a complex that includes attractive grounds with gardens and a lake.

Following a summit in Singapore between the notorious leaders last month, Trump has delivered an unusual gift to Kim Jong Un - a copy of Elton John's "Rocket Man".

Its results will be a major test of Pyongyang's commitment to the Singapore summit accord amid lingering skepticism.

In the meantime, Mr Pompeo and Mr Trump have vowed to keep in place the worldwide economic sanctions that they believe forced the North to the negotiating table in the first place.

The sub under construction at Sinpo may be a successor to that Gorae-class boat, advancing a program that United States officials consider a threat because it could allow North Korea to achieve greater surprise for a nuclear strike.

As U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met North Korean officials in Pyongyang Friday to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, a South Korean lawmaker said the North appears to be working on a new submarine capable of launching ballistic missiles.
