How Mexico has falled in the Round of 16 time and again

The goal was the 227th for Brazil in World Cup play, breaking a tie with Germany for most all-time.

Mexico has crashed out of the soccer World Cup in Russian Federation after losing 2-0 to five-time champions Brazil in the southern city of Samara today.

Moments after Mexico's Jesus Gallardo finished a marauding run with a wayward shot from distance, Brazil nabbed the opener when Neymar tapped in a low cross from the impressive Willian.

Neymar, 26, is the most-fouled player in Russian Federation so far with 23, including six in the Mexico match and an apparent attempt by Miguel Layun to step on his ankle that was not called and left the Paris Saint-Germain player writhing in pain afterwards. Neymar has 11 goals and nine assists in his last 19 games for Brazil.

"In Neymar's defence he has been fouled more than any other player at this World Cup and he is regularly the target of rough treatment". It turned out to be pure histrionics.

"Plus, let's not forget that in the incident that got everyone talking, Miguel Layun did step on his ankle".

Neymar was not the only player who looked sharp for Brazil in the win that sent Mexico packing from the round of 16 at the World Cup for the seventh-straight time.

Brazil beat Mexico this morning 2-0 in a match that got physical on more than one occasion.

Mexico, unfazed by their poor record in the last-16, began brightly and Brazil's full-backs Fagner and Filipe Luis struggled with their pace in attack.

Mexico has now lost at this stage at every tournament over the same period of time, extending its wait for the "quinto partido" - or fifth game - for at least another four years.

"That suggests that Brazil also knew that we were a unsafe rival".

"Neymar is improving in this aspect", said Tite afterwards of the discipline his player showed, within the match's natural confines at least.

Neymar's dispute with Layun unfolded as the Mexico substitute tried to recover the ball.

Neymar had a rather strong reaction to it, some of which could have been motivated by the interest of drawing attention to the incident.

There were no shortage of sombreros in the crowd as Mexican fans decked out the stadium with oversize straw hats and wrestling masks, while Brazilian fans were equally zealous in their fashion choices, featuring headbands in blue, yellow and green with many fans also displaying their country's flag in face paint.

Tite also played a big role in the victory over Mexico, deciding to replace Philippe Coutinho with Firmino.

"Brazil are a great team, they're the best team in the world", Osorio said.

Brazil will take on Belgium in a mouth-watering quarter-final encounter on Friday.
