Poland 1 - 2 Senegal | 19 Jun 2018

Senegal made flawless use of Poland's mistakes to win their World Cup Group H opener at Spartak Stadium in Moscow, Russia on Tuesday.

Aliou Cisse's side were deserved victors in Moscow, although they relied on Lady Luck for their opener on 38 minutes as Thiago Cionek diverted Idrissa Gueye's shot into his own net.

On Sunday, Senegal play Japan, who beat Colombia 2-1 earlier in the day, while Poland will face the South Americans.

Cisse captained Senegal's 2002 team but said his country has never had a player like Sadio Mane before. Their first win at the World Cup in 16 years, Senegal undoubtedly showed more endeavour to win the game. "We weren't aggressive enough, the wingers didn't do a good job and neither did the midfield", said disappointed Poland coach Adam Nawalka.

The youngest coach here at 42, Cisse said: "They had more of the ball but every time they made a mistake we hit them and forced them back".

Despite putting in a limp and leaden performance himself, Lewandowski seemed to point the finger at his teammates for their errors, which ultimately cost Poland the game.

Well, like many of us thought, this Senegal team is a force to be reckoned with and they got the win against the odds.

Senegal were hoping to avoid joining their four fellow African sides - Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and Tunisia - in losing their opening match, and fared little better initially, but they had the matchwinner in Niang.

Szczesny may have been caught out because Niang was having treatment on the touchline and re-entered the pitch as the ball was played backwards to the Poland goalkeeper by Grzegorz Krychowiak.

The Liverpool man knocked the ball to Gueye who shot from the edge of the area was deflected by Cionek past a flat-footed Szczesny.

Keenly waiting to pounce, however, was Mbaye Niang - the man of the match.

"We managed really well to get them out of their comfort zone in the first half".

Piszczek then failed to hit the target on the volley after connecting with Maciej Rybus' cross from the left on 56 minutes, before a mix-up at the back gifted the Senegalese with a second goal soon afterwards.
