Trump defends immigration amid family separations

An audio recording that appears to capture the heartbreaking voices of small Spanish-speaking children crying out for their parents at a US immigration facility took center stage Monday in the growing uproar over the Trump administration's policy of separating immigrant children from their parents.

Trump also claimed that criminals are using children to enter the country.

Trump on the other hand is pretty clear that the shining city is not opening its doors in the grand tradition of Christian charity.

"Why we would even think that this is a tool that is needed to defend our borders is insane", Republican Representative Will Hurd, who represents a Texas district along the border, told National Public Radio.

"That is no different than a U.S. citizen parent that is going through a judicial process, prosecuted for violating the law", Manuel Padilla Jr. of U.S. Border Patrol said of parents being separated from their children.

President Donald Trump, who continues to blame Democrats for a policy cooked up by his administration, doesn't appear to be backing down.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins of ME said she favours tighter border security, but expressed deep concerns about the child separation policy.

Trump blamed opposition Democratic lawmakers for the impasse over US immigration policies, even though Trump's Republican party controls both chambers in Congress, and the family border policies were set by his administration. "We need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart".

Most children are detained in facilities near the border, parents are given the number for a hotline to attempt to track them down.

Politicians and religious groups are among those to have criticised the "inhumane" policy, and the first lady - who last week returned to the public eye for the first time in nearly a month - has admitted she has found it hard to watch the events unfold. Several religious groups, including some conservative ones, have pushed to stop the practice of separating immigrant children from their parents.

Democrats and some in Trump's own Republican Party have blasted the administration for separating almost 2,000 children from their parents at the border between mid-April and the end of May.

Trump has repeatedly, incorrectly blamed Democrats in Congress for the policy. "It is immoral. And it breaks my heart", Bush said on Twitter as she shared her column.

The separations have their roots in a new "zero-tolerance" immigration policy announced by the Department of Justice back in April.

The White House says it's determined to crack down on "catch-and-release", and it can't do that without separating minors from adults under current law. Yet, he says it's up to the Democrats to fix it. "But the big point is they elected to come illegally into the United States and this is a technique that no one hopes will be used extensively or for very long".

While the First Lady role has no basis in the Constitution, the position has often led its holder to have a special moral authority above partisan politics.

"You're not going to see a majority make a policy that's clearly adverse to the president", Jolly said.
