James Comey and Federal Bureau of Investigation criticised by watchdog over Hillary Clinton emails

U.S. President Donald Trump launched fierce attacks Friday on former FBI Director James Comey, a day after the release of a watchdog report that concludes there were errors, not political bias in the agency's handling of its investigation of Hillary Clinton's use of private email server.

Later talking to reporters on the North Lawns of the White House, Trump said he did the right thing to fire Comey.

"I was on the way to winning until a combination of Jim Comey's letter, on October 28, and Russian WikiLeaks raised doubts in the mind of people who were inclined to vote for me but got scared off", Clinton said at a 2017 event titled Women for Women International.

Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz's 500-page report called Comey "insubordinate" for his decisions to keep his DOJ superiors out of the loop.

Comey concealed from the Justice Department his plans to make a public announcement until the morning he did so, even though such statements are normally handled by the Justice Department, if at all, the report says.

Although the report made it clear that, if anything, Comey helped Trump by re-opening the Clinton investigation before the election, Meyers focused on the "infuriating" detail about Comey's own email use. There was total bias, Trump said in an interview.

Kaufman said he sees the anti-Trump text as another indication that some cards are stacked against the president.

The IG came down hard on Comey, as the former director suspected he would. The report represents the culmination of an 18-month review into one of the most consequential FBI investigations in recent history.

In a previous tweet on Friday morning, Trump also attacked Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok, who spoke critically of the real estate mogul in text messages exchanged with another official during the 2016 presidential race. "No. No he won't. We'll stop it", Strzok responded. Still, investigators said they did not find "documentary or testimonial evidence" that the bias affected the probe - a point echoed by Strzok's lawyer, Aitan Goelman, on Thursday. Ms Page and Mr Strzok were romantically involved and used their work phones to engage in long-running text discussions of various work and personal topics, according to people familiar with the case.

House Republicans have vowed to keep the pressure on Strzok, and the House Judiciary Committee intends to subpoena the disgraced agent for testimony.

Sessions praised FBI Director Christopher Wray for his handling of the fallout from the report, saying he was "real proud" of Wray for his remarks Thursday.

"The report also resoundingly demonstrates that there was no prosecutable case against Mrs Clinton, as we had concluded", Comey wrote.
