Liverpool deal to sign Nabil Fekir collapses as Lyon end negotiations

When the deal was not made official on Friday, doubts were cast over the player's fitness as he had suffered a serious injury to his right knee previously.

With France scheduled to play the United States tonight and then fly off to Russian Federation ahead of the World Cup, it now appears the 24-year-old will remain at Lyon, at least until after the tournament.

"Transfer negotiations with Liverpool and Nabil Fekir have not succeeded and Olympique Lyonnais has chose to put an end to this negotiation tonight", it read.

Earlier today, Le Graët had told reporters he believes negotiations for Fekir's move to Anfield are nearing completion, claiming the player passed the requisite physical checks at France's Clairefontaine base.

This comes on the back of FFF's President's comments that Fekir had gone through a medical and the outcome of the same was "positive". I spent a quarter of an hour with him this morning [Saturday], and his main focus is France.

"It's always like that when you talk about a transfer. There is something logical, it has already been done for others".

But Liverpool will now have to wait until the 2018 World Cup finishes in July to make another move for Fekir, in which time a lot can happen.

With the World Cup now on the horizon, a cooling-off period may well yet see Lyon and Liverpool re-open discussions-unless all is not as it seems with Lyon's statement.

"It would be better for him, but he's not perturbed", he said of the No.10.

Fekir scored 21 goals and added nine assists in 39 appearances for Lyon last season.

With France being one of the hotly tipped favourites for the tournament, it could be a while before Liverpool and Lyon return to the negotiating table.

Sportsmail understands Liverpool attempted to reduce the fee following an issue with Fekir's medical but Lyon refused to accept the new terms.
