Crocodile kills pastor during mass baptism ceremony in Ethiopian lake

A Protestant pastor was fatally attacked by a crocodile as he baptized followers at a lake in Ethiopia.

A crocodile killed a pastor during water baptisms in a lake in southern Ethiopia Sunday.

Lonely Planet warns Lake Abaya has many crocodiles "said to be aggressive towards people and animals because the lake has few fish, their preferred food".

"He baptised the first person and he passed on to another one", a resident of the nearby town of Arba Minch told the BBC's Amharic language service.

The pastor, identified as Docho Eshete, died after being bitten on his legs, back and hands.

"All of a sudden, a crocodile jumped out of the lake and grabbed the pastor, pushing aside the person he was baptising".

The crocodile reportedly escaped as fishermen used nets to retrieve Eshete's body.

Lake Abaya, one of Ethiopia's largest lakes, "is known to have a huge crocodile population", according to Ethiopian news site Borkena.

Members of the congregation, as well as fishermen on the lake, attempted to rescue the clergyman - an nearly impossible task.

The crocodile was not captured.

The Crocodile Specialist Group estimates that Nile crocodiles are responsible for more than 300 attacks in Africa each year.
