Apple announces slew of controls to help with smartphone addiction

Updates could reportedly include providing users with a way to track and limit their time usage.

At Apple's WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) yesterday, the company announced that it's responding to the problem by changing the way its smartphones and tablets work - just like Google did last month.

"It's a smart move for Apple to reflect the current concerns around security and privacy with new tools to prevent web companies from actively tracking your browsing activity", Mr Wood said.

Apple faced a backlash late past year when it emerged that the company slowed down some older iPhones with flagging batteries.

With the new OS, you'll be able to turn off notifications for apps you don't want to deal with from the lock screen. iOS 12 is also bringing support for grouped notifications.

Apple's proprietary Stocks app for iPhone will also be coming to iPad with iOS 12 featuring an all-new format and design on the bigger screen. Instead, Apple generates most of its revenue from device sales.

Apple also unveiled new features for Siri, its voice command service, as well as group video chats over FaceTime.

In fact, Apple will send users daily and weekly reports that will break down "the total time a person spends in each app they use, their usage across categories of apps, how many notifications they receive and how often they pick up their iPhone or iPad", according to Apple.

"There are more 100 million apps out there for health and wellness", he said.

"The tools specifically created to analyse and manage the amount of time kids spends on Apple devices will be a welcome, but potentially alarming new feature for many parents". Once the limit is reached and you open the app, another message will pop up reminding you that you've already used your maximum allotted time, though you can always choose to ignore it. New features help protect users' anonymity online.

Apple Inc. has unveiled a slate of controls to curb smartphone addiction and make it harder for users to be tracked online, even as the company rolled out new features created to keep people tethered to their devices. The company said it would place new restrictions on how apps can access users' cameras and microphones, and make it more hard for data-collection firms to create identifiable "fingerprints" of individual devices.

"[Apps] try to draw us in for fear of missing out", said Apple's Crag Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering.

"It's exactly the kind of thing that a hacker like myself would come up with, because you're exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology", he said at an Axios event in Philadelphia.
