Trudeau calls United States viewing Canada as national security threat 'simply ridiculous'

Countries around the world are fighting back against President Donald Trump's decision to slap tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, announcing retaliatory countermeasures and warning that the USA plan will hurt us consumers.

"I'm sure that the president looks forward to coming to Canada and meeting all the other leaders with many, many important issues going on throughout the world".

Germany's Volkswagen, Europe's largest automaker, warned that the decision could start a trade war that no side would win.

French President Emmanuel Macron said in a statement Friday that he told Trump in a phone call that the new US tariffs on European, Mexican and Canadian goods are illegal and a "mistake".

These include products the European Union may subject to tariffs from rice to orange juice, cosmetics, motorcycles, motor boats to stainless steel sinks.

Canada and Mexico, who were also hit by the tariffs, are still planning their own retaliatory moves.

"Donald Trump's haphazard and reckless plan to impose tariffs on Canada and the European Union is an absolute disaster that will cause unnecessary economic pain to farmers, manufacturers and consumers in Vermont and throughout the country".

Mnuchin rejected comments from some G7 officials that the United States was circumventing worldwide trade rules with the tariffs or ceding leadership of a global economic and trading system it largely built after World War Two.

"We have to keep things in proportion", he said on the French radio station France Info.

The European Commission said that it could take asymmetric measures, targeting classic American products such as Levi's jeans, Harley-Davidson motorbikes and bourbon whiskey.

EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom says that the tariffs imposed on European steel and aluminum exports to the United States by President Donald Trump "is further weakening the Trans-Atlantic relations".

She said: "We are not seeking to escalate any situation but we need to respond and we'll do so in a measured manner, but not responding would be the same as accepting these tariffs which we consider are illegal".

A White House official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the back and forth between both countries, said Trudeau spoke to Trump last Friday, and then Trudeau called Pence on Monday to follow up.

The tariffs of 25 per cent on steel products and 10 per cent on aluminium, which affect the EU, Canada and Mexico, came into effect on Friday.

Against this backdrop, we highlight some industries that could be impacted the most by the tariffs.

The EU said it has opened legal challenges against China and the United States at the World Trade Organization on Friday as punishing trade tariffs announced by Washington raised the prospects of a global trade war.

"This is not the way we do business, and certainly not between longstanding partners, friends, and allies", she said. Canada unveiled a package of counter-tariffs on United States imports valued at Can$16.6 billion (US$12.8 billion). "It is pure protectionism", she said. "It's Donald Trump's failure to understand the implications for the U.S. and world economy of his isolationist policies".
