Iran tells Europe to step up and save nuclear deal

Iran would also have to walk away from core pillars of its foreign policy, including its involvement in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and Afghanistan.

"The United States is unable to understand that Iran has sovereign rights, including the right to civilian nuclear power", Ulyanov stressed.

The sweeping list would sharply curtail Iran's ballistic missile program and wider behavior in the region, and require a radical change in policy - if not leadership - in Tehran. Iran has no need for anyone's permission to act in the Middle East.

Pompeo is expected to call for those same allies and other nations to join the U.S.in ramping up pressure on Iran in hopes of securing what Trump has described as a "better deal".

From both inside Iran and outside, the lingering feeling was that Pompeo had spelled out a litany of demands so onerous that the only goal could be ousting the current regime, given that it was so unlikely to agree to any of those requirements.

The new US demands are so intrusive and broad that Iran's rejection of them seemed all but certain even before Rouhani spoke.

The Iran nuclear deal was signed between six countries in 2015 - Iran, US, Britain, Germany, Russia, France and China for lifting economic sanctions on Tehran in exchange for limitations to the country's nuclear programme.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers' summit in Argentina that the exit from the Iran nuclear deal would be a catastrophe.

Russian Federation and China have also criticized the U.S. move and vowed to maintain trade with Iran.

Pompeo had urged Tehran to report to the International Atomic Energy Agency about its nuclear program, end proliferation of its missiles, and stop supporting "terrorist groups" in the Middle East.

Mogherini stressed right after Trump withdrew from the agreement that the European Union would remain in the agreement and will do so "as long as Iran continues to implement its nuclear related commitments, as it is doing so far".

"Iran must release all U.S. citizens, as well as the citizens of our partners and allies, each of them detained on spurious charges".

Meanwhile, the conservative Kayhan newspaper, which usually voices the political attitudes of Iran's hardliners, said in its May 14 edition that Rouhani had made numerous strategic mistakes in his decision to enter negotiations with the West.

"Pompeo has not outlined a strategy, but rather a grab bag of wishful thinking that can only be interpreted as a call for regime change in Iran", Suzanne Maloney of the Brookings' Centre for Middle East Policy wrote on Twitter.

The speech was a fresh example of the Trump administration's maximalist, with-us-or-against-us strategy that's also playing out over North Korea's nuclear program, and has been encouraged by Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton. "If they make the decision quickly, that would be wonderful, if they choose not to do so we will stay hard at this until we achieve the outcomes I set forward", said Pompeo.

"It must cease its threatening behaviour against its neighbours", Pompeo said. Former President Barack Obama did not seek a Senate-ratified treaty with Iran because of the dim prospects for getting approval from a Republican-run Congress.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Seyed Abbas Araghchi who was one of the key negotiators in the nuclear talks with the world powers has told Spanish El Pais that the United States withdrawal from the nuclear deal will lead to its isolation in the global arena, adding that if they try to link JCPOA to other issues, they will lose the agreement and make it more complicated to resolve the rest of the issues. Europeans allies had pleaded with Trump not to scuttle that deal and are now scrambling to keep the deal alive even without the U.S. Now Washington's European allies want to stick with the existing deal. "That is their decision to make", Pompeo said. "We are waiting for the Europeans to deliver to us an economic package that they have promised and we had held discussions on".
