Could Facebook, Inc. (FB) Become Tinder For The Older Crowd?

Shares of both Match Group Inc and InterActiveCorp, owners of Tinder, slid on news of Facebook's foray into dating since the announcement earlier last week, and have stayed down.

Mr Zuckerberg was speaking at the company's annual F8 developer conference, where he referred to the recent data privacy scandal involving the site and Cambridge Analytica as a "major breach of trust". The feature isn't just for shallow relationships and mere hookups according to Zuckerberg.

"There are millions of singles in this demographic who want to meet someone but have reservations about using dating apps", Golden explained.

"We're hard at work making sure people don't misuse our platform".

The smattering of new features have brought confusion to Facebook users as well, but not at the expense of enthusiasm.

On stage in San Jose, Zuckerberg assured the audience that the feature has been developed "with privacy and safety in mind from the beginning" and is expected to launch "soon".

In a separate announcement Tuesday, Facebook said it would allow users to delete personal information provided to Facebook by outside sites and apps, and bar Facebook from obtaining such data in the future.

This comes after the 33-year-old testified before Congress last month for about 10 hours over two days. And while this has helped propel the company to where it is today, it's also seen it suffer the occasional setback, as witnessed by the Cambridge Analytica scandal that saw Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg recently testify before US Congress.

Investors in other online dating platforms appear spooked by Facebook's move into the space. The main concern of users right now is clearly, why would we give Facebook even more of our information??

Zuckerberg says that if you choose to clear that information, your Facebook experience "won't be as good while it relearns your preferences".

The profile will only be visible to other people using the dating service. With new services ranging from offering a chance at real-life romantic love, to augmented reality features in Messenger, to an affordable virtual-reality simulator, Facebook users are the most excited to see how their data is used next. He stated that it is unclear about what Facebook plans to do in order to manage user privacy for this dating app. The Facebook mock-up on display this week may have looked similar, dominated by photos users can swipe through, but Zuckerberg's site has an vast, built-in advantage when it comes to the dating game that no other site can match: data. The time is nearly here when Facebook users will be able to use dating service on its platform. For one, people hardly use dating apps in this country, there is a lot of embarrassed silence and taboo surrounding it all.
