Angola to Attend World Press Freedom Day Event in Ghana

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa yesterday paid rich tributes to press and media professionals as the world celebrates the World Press Freedom Day today.

According to UNESCO, their organizing is actively involved in defending the freedom of expression, which is at the core of its mandate, and has urged the world community "to think of the relations between the media, justice and the rule of law".

"That he died on the eve of World Press Freedom Day serves as a reminder that much needs to be done for press freedom around the world and end the slaughter of journalists". The theme of 2018 highlights the importance of an enabling legal environment for press freedom and prosecution of crimes against journalists. Their work to monitor and report abuses of democratic process, including corruption, is a critical contribution to upholding democracy and promoting sustainable development. The country has fallen six places to 137th on the 2018 World Press Freedom Index.

Reporters Without Borders cited those concerns in its own annual press freedom rankings last week as it dropped the United States down two spots. They expose truths we may otherwise never hear.

"He speaks out frequently and eloquently whenever necessary to remind us all of the vulnerability of journalists and of free speech, and that we must all be constantly on guard against the various threats", he said. Sign up here for our free Daily Updates.

The Prize awards a journalist who stood his or her ground in the defence of press freedom.

World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO's General Conference.

"That Sestoso's murder occurred on the same day 10 journalists were killed in Afghanistan made it particularly tragic", said Carlos Conde, a researcher in the Asia division of Human Rights Watch.

He ended his message with a note of appreciation for social media users, "I would once again like to appreciate the proactive role of everyone on social media for their commendable work towards safeguarding the freedom of press and expression". Laws that protect independent journalism, freedom of expression and the right to information need to be adopted, implemented and enforced.
