'Golden State Killer' DNA search led to wrong man past year

"She was such a victim's advocate and wanted cases that hadn't been publicized much", she said.

Joseph DeAngelo was arrested Tuesday after investigators say they matched crime-scene DNA using genetic material stored by a distant relative on a website.

Investigators backed two vehicles, a motorcycle and fishing boat out of the home's three-car garage and installed tarps to block prying eyes and news cameras. By the next day, authorities identified him as the Golden State Killer, citing DNA evidence, according to the New York Times.

She called police, who responded with in minutes and asked her to provide a detailed description of what she saw.

Court records obtained by The Associated Press showed that investigators used a genetic profile based off DNA from crime scenes linked to the serial killer and compared it to information from YSearch.org.

Former Del Mar resident Margaret Wardlow was just 13 years old and living alone with her mother in Sacramento when she was raped by the man also known as the East Area Rapist. After graduation, she moved to Los Angeles to work as a screenwriter. It's really shocking. I started crying and picked her up from school because it's scary.

Reamer, who now lives in DE, is the mother of an Associated Press reporter.

Wardlow said she looks forward to going to Sacramento to watch the proceedings. "That was unheard of just 10 years ago".

She passed the results of her research onto active investigators in the case, and even bought high-volume scanners to digitize old files for them.

For Oswalt, the news of DeAngelo's arrest feels deeply personal.

Oswalt suspects otherwise, writing on Twitter that his late wife's book did, in fact, play a part.

Oswalt discussed the case Wednesday night during an appearance on NBC's "Late Night with Seth Meyers".

True-crime journalist Michelle McNamara, who died in 2016, was dedicated to solving the case and wrote I'll Be Gone in the Dark, a novel all about her search for the elusive criminal.

Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was jailed without bail almost two years to the day after McNamara died unexpectedly in her sleep.

Sheriff Scott Jones said Friday that Joseph James DeAngelo was in a psychiatric ward of the county jail and has said little.

While Domingo-McMullan says, "the hunt" is over, she knows there's a long way to go.

The East Area Rapist has devastated families throughout the state and in 1981 he claimed the lives of a Santa Barbara woman and her boyfriend.

Prosecutors say Joseph DeAngelo carried out his most violent crimes in the months after he was sacked for shoplifting in 1979.

But Michelle McNamara, by reaching millions of readers, shined a brighter light on this case than had ever been shone before. He is suspected of killing 12 people and raping about 50 and could face more charges. The rapes and murders were also committed before the advent of DNA profiling, which prevented investigators from confirming that it was the same man acting in both the Northern Californian rapes and the Southern Californian ransackings, rapes, and murders until 2001. The end result is a vivid portrait of the constellation of the offender's myriad crimes set against a sharply rendered backdrop of California in the 1970s and '80s.
