Steven Gerrard among candidates for Rangers job

The Guardian and BBC Sport are among those to claim the Liverpool great has held talks with the Rangers board.

Director of football Mark Allen is said to be heading up the delegation as they try to convince the 37-year-old that Ibrox is the ideal place to begin his managerial career.

Speculation has been mounting that Rangers would be looking to bring Gerrard in as a permanent replacement for Pedro Caixinha ever since the former Reds star was pictured in attendance at an Old Firm match last month.

Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that Rangers chairman Dave King attended Liverpool's 5-2 humbling of Roma in their Champions League semi-final first leg clash on Tuesday.

The Liverpool legend has been working in the club's academy since retirement and appears to be very serious about a future in management, presumably with the goal of taking the Anfield hot seat one day.

Given Gerrard only has coaching experience with the Reds' Under-18 side, appointing the 37-year-old would be seen as a courageous move by King, but judging by his previous comments, Gerrard sounds like he'd definitely find the opportunity too hard to turn down. His side sit second in the U18 Premier League table, behind only Manchester United in the table.

Steven Gerrard says three new signings in the right areas this summer could lead Liverpool to greatness.

The present Rangers incumbent Graeme Murty is unlikely to be given the post full-time having been appointed manager till the end of the season in December after impressing in a caretaker role when Pedro Caixinha was sacked last October.
