WhatsApp now banned for children and teens under 16 in some places

WhatsApp will ask European users to confirm they are at least 16 years old when they are prompted to agree new terms of service and a privacy policy provided by a new WhatsApp Ireland Ltd entity in the next few weeks.

"Our goal is simply to explain how we use and protect the limited information we have about you", it said.

If you live in a country in the European Region, you must be at least 16 years old to use WhatsApp.

WhatsApp will update its terms and conditions of service to reflect the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) standards that were passed for the European Union.

Facebook, which has also been criticised for its handling of personal data, is taking a different approach to younger users.

Currently, the minimum age for using the service is 13.

Meanwhile, Facebook too is upgrading its privacy policy to comply with Europes GDPR policy. The new rules also include specific protections to protect children from having personal data collected for marketing purposes or to create user profiles.

WhatsApp suspended the change in Europe after widespread regulatory scrutiny. Already WhatsApp's move to acquire additional information from its users in Europe to share it with Facebook has been distorted by European agencies.

The majority of those 87 million are based in the United States but 1,079,031 UK users have had their data shared improperly, the tech company said. How the platform will verify and enforce this new age limit is yet unclear, as it is well-known for collecting very little data about users or their usage of the app. WhatsApp hasnt detailed exactly how the age verification process will work or if anyone will be able to enter any birth date as form of verification. The blog post also points to safety tips on the service, such as the ability to block unwanted users, and delete and report spam.
