Romney's Path To Succeed Utah Sen. Hatch Just Got More Complicated

Mitt Romney did anything but cruise to the Republican nomination for Orrin Hatch's Utah Senate seat on Saturday in what CNN calls "a wild and raucous day of voting" at the state's nominating convention.

Mr. Romney remains the heavy favorite overall to win the Senate seat in November. "I'm exhausted of business as usual in Washington, D.C. If you want things to change, you need to vote for change". A lot of them have been political newcomers who questioned Romney's criticism of President Donald Trump and the depth of his ties to Utah. Romney garnered 49 percent of the vote.

After the protracted legal fight, the legislature reached a compromise that created a two-option process to get to the ballot: Candidates could either gather the requisite 27,000 signatures or participate in the GOP caucuses.

On the campaign trail in Utah, Romney dropped his criticism of Trump.

Earlier this year, Kemberlee blogged about former MA governor and former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney announcing his Senate run in Utah.

Gathering signatures is unpopular among many conservative delegates in the state who say it dilutes their ability to choose a candidate.

The results are a setback for Romney's attempts at a political comeback and serve as a reminder of his 2012 comment that "this ain't bean bag" - a phrase dating back to the turn of the 20th century which suggests politics is a game meant only for tough men. He fell to former President Obama in the general election. Kennedy captured 51 percent of the vote. Trump has endorsed Romney in his Senate bid.

Romney, who called Russia the biggest geopolitical threat facing the United States during his 2012 presidential campaign, said he was also keeping a close eye on the evidence emerging about Russian meddling in USA elections but was still thinking about what remedies would best address that encroachment.

In 2016, Romney was a prominent "Never Trumper", calling the candidate a "phony, a fraud".

"Thoughtless college students seek exclusion from our First Amendment", Romney said. Did very, very well, ' Romney told Salt Lake City's Fox 13 following his defeat.

He mentioned the occupant of the Oval Office by name and pledged to "support President Trump" if he got to Washington. This is terrific for the people of Utah'. He became a registered voter here in 2014, and he and his wife Ann now live in Holladay next to their son Josh and his family.
