Harley Quinn movie tabs Cathy Yan to direct

Robbie was instrumental in the hiring of Yan as one of her contingencies was that the film would have a female director. The movie looks to be a "girl gang movie" which will adapt the DC Comics' Birds of Prey story arc.

Production for the sequel to "Suicide Squad", in which Harley Quinn was the breakout character, also is expected to happen in 2018.

The Harley Quinn movie is based on the Birds of Prey comic, which implies an ensemble piece, with Margot Robbie already attached to star.

DC Comics' Birds of Prey are an global crimefighting team featuring heroines such as Oracle (Barbara Gordon), Black Canary (Dinah Laurel Lance) and the Huntress (Helena Bertinelli).

Deadline is reporting that Cathy Han may be directing the planned Harley Quinn movie over at Warner Brothers. Upon graduating, she worked as a journalist for the Wall Street Journal in New York, Beijing and Hong Kong before following her dreams as a filmmaker.

This is an exciting career step for Yan, a rare female director to break into Hollywood's tradition of giving blockbusters to filmmakers with just a well-received indie or two to their name (think Colin Trevorrow or Jon Watts).

The Harley Quinn movie will start filming at the end of the year or early next year. For the film, only Quinn has officially been announced to appear. This powerhouse group of women include Patty Jenkins, director of the 2017 blockbuster "Wonder Woman", and recently appointed director of "New Gods" Ava DuVernay, whose first big-budget film "A Wrinkle in Time" debuted at No. 2 in its opening weekend. Ferris Bueller's Day Off star Mia Sara portrayed the psychotic doctor with a Joker fetish and is barely recognizable from the Harley Quinn we know from Batman: The Animated Series and Suicide Squad.

Given this information, some fans may understandably be wondering what's happening with the slew of other Harley Quinn spinoffs now in development.
