Kentucky teachers react to vetoes

Kentucky's Republican governor says he guarantees a child was sexually abused because they were left home alone after teachers forced the closure of more than 30 school districts to come to have a rally at the state Capitol.

"It's entirely inappropriate and perverse that the man sitting in the governorship would criticize Kentuckians who stood up today for teachers, public employees and our public education by insinuating that their presence in Frankfort today caused a child to be sexually assaulted", Kentucky Democratic Party Executive Director Mary Nishimuta said.

With the chants of hundreds of teachers ringing inside their own ears, Kentucky lawmakers voted Friday to override the Senate's veto of the two-year country funding which increases public schooling spending together with the assistance of a significantly more compared to 480 million tax growth.

The country budget that is working consists of listing new spending for instruction, fueled and also a 6 per cent sales tax on certain solutions, for example auto and home fixes.

The governor making these comments moments after both the house and senate voted to override the governor's Vetoes of the tax bill and budget.

In rejecting the increase, Bevin said it would not generate enough money to cover new state spending. They said that the tax growth disproportionately hurts the poor when.

Kentucky's House and Senate have overridden two of Governor Matt Bevin's vetoes. "We have to have this revenue to fund our schools".

"It's awesome that even when Republicans control both chambers of state government as well as the Governor's Mansion that they can't even agree on the direction to take Kentucky", Self said. The final vote followed a 57-40 House vote in favor of the override. Senate President Robert Stivers throw the decisive vote.

Similar protests have occurred across the nation, with teachers rallying in Oklahoma and Arizona over low funding and pay.

Line says teachers were not paid for Friday, and they will make up the day, by adding it to the end school year.

The override of that bill led to a second override of Bevin's veto of the budget.

In Arizona, after weeks of teacher protests and walkout threats across the state, Governor Doug Ducey promised a net 20 percent raise by 2020. Bevin asked for lawmakers to pass that provision in a separate bill either today or tomorrow.

The Republican governor has been a sharp critic of the Kentucky Education Association in recent weeks as the group has protested his pension reform bill that he signed into law this week. They are instead focused on overall funding. The state is at least $41 billion short of what it needs to pay retirement benefits over the next 30 years, straining state and local government finances. The pension bill passed by the Kentucky legislature moves new hires onto a hybrid pension plan and would not protect them from future changes to the system.
