Six Turkish troops killed in PKK attack

His office said Macron praised the role of the SDF in fighting Islamic State in Syria - a battle which the Western countries say is not over - and assured them of France's support in stabilising northeastern Syria.

Turkey stormed the northern Syrian town of Afrin last week, and has repeatedly threatened to push its operations further east to Manbij where US troops are stationed.

The SDF, which is spearheaded by the Kurdish YPG militia, has been the main partner for the US -led coalition in Syria, where some 2,000 USA forces are operating in the fight against Islamic State, also known as ISIS.

Earlier this month Turkey ousted Kurdish fighters from the Syrian-Kurdish city of Afrin located in Syria.

A PYD member in Paris said Macron had promised at Thursday's meeting with the SDF to send more troops to northern Syria, provide humanitarian assistance and push a diplomatic solution.

French President Emmanuel Macron raised Turkey's ire by meeting in Paris with Syrian rebels, including Kurdish fighters that Turkey considers terrorists. Some members of the group evoked an eventual intervention by France in northern Syria to support them in the midst of the military operation launched by Turkey in the area.

But Erdogan at the time sought to reassure him, saying Turkey had no eye on Syrian territory.

In his address in Ankara, the Turkish leader also said he held a telephone conversation with Macron last week during which the French leader made "bizarre" comments that forced Erdogan to raise his voice and respond with a "high frequency".

"Turkey will not hesitate to use initiative if terrorists in Manbij are not driven away", read a statement published on Erdogan's website on Wednesday.

"Since when has Turkey been sitting down at the table with terror organisations?"

Officials also told the newspaper the White House ordered the State Department to put spending on hold following Trump's surprise announcement Thursday that the USA would "very soon" withdraw from Syria.

A roadside bomb in northern Syria killed two coalition personnel, an American and a Briton, and wounded five others in a rare attack since the USA -led coalition sent troops into the war-torn country, the US and British militaries and a US defense official said Friday.
