Australia bans Smith, Warner for one year over ball tampering scandal

Cricket Australia has issued suspensions to captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner and Cameron Bancroft following its investigation into the ball-tampering scandal. There were many, you would say tricks, that many teams would use out in the middle.

Warner, who identified himself as the ringleader in the sandpaper plot, will never be allowed to hold a leadership position in Australian cricket again. That has been a common theme.

The three players have been suspended from "all worldwide and domestic cricket", but Australia's governing body for the sport said they will be permitted to play club games and "will be encouraged to do so to maintain links with the cricket community". But are there levels of ball tampering, or is it just ball tampering? is putting a mint in your pocket so you can shine a ball on the field pre-meditated cheating, or just ball tampering.

And that's what makes Benji Harris mad.

"A focused and balanced perspective is needed in the condemnation on those involved in this, with a clear and critical consideration to the social impact and mental health of all players", he said. We were waiting for the decision of Cricket Australia.

At The Age newspaper in Melbourne, the "twists and turns" keep on coming in the aftermath of the ball-tampering saga.

What constitutes the so-called Spirit of Cricket is being widely debated.

Former Australian Test batsman Adam Voges said it was "genuinely possible" coach Darren Lehmann and other players did not know about the ball tampering plans.

He was referring to frequent comments by Australian cricketers about the limits of acceptable behaviour and "not crossing the line".

Smith and Bancroft owned up to the offence at the press conference after play on the third day, and while Warner was not initially at the forefront of the scandal, a view is emerging that he had hatched the idea to tamper with the ball and delegated it to his opening partner Bancroft, with Smith's approval.

It's been widely deemed as inexcusable.

It's Australian to play it hard, and tough. The Harris family had cherished a photo of Benji and his two brothers taken with Smith - wearing his Big Bash League Twenty20 league uniform - near their home in 2013.

Waugh, who always believed in the sanctity of the Baggy Green added: "The Australian Cricket team has always believed it could win in any situation against any opposition, by playing combative, skillful and fair cricket, driven by our pride in the fabled Baggy Green". "It's not the whole of Australia that has done this". "The thing for me would be if we take a leaf out of someone like say New Zealand's book the way they play and respect the opposition".

The ball tampering plan could be seen as being nearly comical if it hadn't destroyed reputations and possibly careers. Bancroft, caught on TV appearing to rub yellow tape on the ball, admitted trying to change its condition while Smith said the team's "leadership group knew about it". There was no ICC sanction against Warner. "But I don't think a one year ban is the answer".

Smith and Warner received 12-month suspensions from all worldwide and domestic cricket, while Bancroft was given a nine-month suspension.
