Democrat JB Pritzker Wins Illinois Gubernatorial Primary

Progressives face their next test Tuesday in IL, with a slew of candidates vying for a chance to help Democrats try to gain control of the U.S. House this fall.

Gov. Bruce Rauner's wife joked last week they would move to Italy if Rauner lost the GOP nomination. Despite those connections, she has positioned herself as a "reform-minded, political outsider" who wants to offer a bipartisan approach to criminal justice reform and other issues.

Longtime Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, a near-constant GOP target, was also an issue in several Democratic primaries.

Democrats seeking to replace Gutierrez are Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia, activist Sol Flores and Chicago police officer Richard Gonzalez.

Lipinski's district, which stretches from Chicago to the southwest suburbs, is expected to remain in Democratic hands in November.

Billionaire J.B. Pritzker spent $70 million on the Illinois Democratic gubernatorial primary and it paid off.

The Hyatt hotel heir contributed $69.5 million to his own campaign, helping propel him to victory over five other candidates, including Chris Kennedy and state Sen.

Ives argued that Rauner had abandoned his conservative base and broken his promise to govern without a social agenda when he signed the abortion measure into law.

The Chicago businessman and heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune put roughly $70 million into his campaign, spending heavily on advertising and staffing campaign offices across IL.

The Democratic nominee will run against incumbent Republican Governor Bruce Rauner in November.

"I've been involved in politics a long time, and I've never seen Democrats as enthusiastic as they are right now", Pritzker said.

"This primary election was hard fought", Rauner said, congratulating his opponent. It's setting up what could be the most expensive governor's race in USA history.

Lipinski, the policy chairman of the conservative Blue Dog Democrats, has built a moderate record, opposing the Affordable Care Act because of his antiabortion stance. Her surprise announcement that she wouldn't seek a fifth term prompted the large group of hopefuls to get into the race. Kennedy, son of former U.S. Sen. It's an old trick on his part, saying he's not in charge.

Trucking company worker Joe Nowak of Summit says he voted for Lipinski because he's comfortable with him. - The stage is set for the fall election in IL with democrats and republicans each choosing their nominees in the state primary on Tuesday (March 20). "That's what we proved tonight", she said.

Biss had successfully cast himself as the "middle class" candidate. "We divvied up the ... campaign and we went at it every single day".

Rauner, a wealthy private-equity investor, won the Republican nomination Tuesday over the insurgent candidacy of conservative state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton.

Polls are opening across IL in a primary that is being widely watched because of the money being spent in the governor's race.

Tuesday's IL primary offered one marquee congressional race that matched an old-fashioned Chicago machine pol against someone who better reflected the wave of the Democratic present and future. Kennedy raised $6.9 million and Biss raised $6.7 million. Pritzker was hit with negative headlines throughout his campaign, which began with a Sun-Times investigation which revealed he received a $230,000 property tax break by ripping out toilets in a Gold Coast mansion.

The first-term governor congratulated his challenger "on her principled stand" and called on Republicans to join together for the fall contest against Democrat J.B. Pritzker.

Newman, who was the IL spokeswoman for the gun-control group Moms Demand Action, received endorsements from NARAL Pro-Choice America, MoveOn, Emily's List and two of Lipinski's more liberal IL colleagues, Reps.

Meanwhile, it's worth noting that the race for governor was not the only one on the primary ballot.

Centrist incumbents in both parties survived high-profile primaries in IL on Tuesday, edging out restive liberal and conservative challengers in contests that served as tests of the establishment's strength against insurgents.

"I'm the one person who can win", Rauner told a southern IL radio station last week, saying he's "excited" to take on Pritzker.

The governor blasted the almost half-million-dollar ad buy as an attempt by Washington liberals to "interfere" in the primary, contending it was a sign that the other side had identified him as the tougher candidate to beat in November.

The Chicago businessman and heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune put roughly $70 million into his campaign, spending heavily on advertising and staffing campaign offices across IL. Daniel Biss, who touts his middle-class status. Pritzker spent more than $60 million to win his race.
