FIU student among dead in Florida bridge collapse confirmed Sweetwater Mayor

These are the first two cars pulled from the rubble.

Authorities "obviously have an idea of who is in these vehicles", Perez said, but they would be taken to the medical examiner's office for "100 percent identification".

Instead, it collapsed Thursday, months before it was to open, crushing cars below, killing at least six people and leaving investigators with the hard task of trying to figure out why it happened and who might be held responsible.

Investigators say they do not believe they will find any more survivors in the rubble. He was on the phone with Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez hours after the bridge collapse, the newspaper said.

Homicide detectives opened an investigation on Friday into the collapse of a new footbridge that killed at least six people at Miami's Florida International University (FIU), as questions began to swirl about the companies behind the structure's controversial design and construction. The voicemail wasn't picked up until after the collapse. "It was very bad", he told CNN affiliate WSVN.

To some bridge engineers, the decision to install the span's main concrete segment over a busy road before building its main support tower was puzzling.

FIGG Bridge Design partnered with Muller Engineering Group to build the Skyway, which is the world's longest cable-stayed bridges that have been built in the United States since the late 1970's. The school has always been interested in this kind of bridge design; in 2010, it opened an Accelerated Bridge Construction-University Transportation Center to "provide the transportation industry with the tools needed to effectively and economically utilize the principles of ABC to enhance mobility and safety, and produce safe, environmentally friendly, long-lasting bridges". Then, on Saturday - at the start of FIU's weeklong spring break - a rig moved the span into position over the street as community members gathered to watch.

The fatalities included a student at FIU, one person died at a hospital, and Miami-Dade Police director Juan Perez said five bodies were located with the help of cameras but had not yet been retrieved.

Officials expect to find additional victims under the debris.

The bridge was scheduled to open to foot traffic in 2019, and was created to boost safety on busy 8th Street, where an 18-year-old FIU student was fatally struck by a vehicle in August. The process took about six hours.

"It is exactly the opposite of what we had intended, and we want to express our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of those who have been affected", Rosenberg, the university's president, said in a video. A 90-ton concrete portion of the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge fell 40 feet onto railroad tracks, the newspaper reported.

FIU has been on spring break this week, but classes will resume as scheduled on Monday. Federal contract data shows that since 2013, MCM has been awarded about $130 million worth of contracts from the Army and Navy for various construction, maintenance and fix projects.

At least one MCM project resulted in a lawsuit concerning safety.

Records show that a construction company - Munilla Construction Management, or MCM - has done extensive work for the government and that some of its projects have come under scrutiny from safety officials. The company's website says it's known for being a pioneer in artful bridge design since 1978.
