Trudeau discussed with the trump of duty

Canada will work to make sure it does not become a back door for cheap offshore steel trying to enter the USA market, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reiterated Tuesday on his tour of Canadian steel and aluminum producing regions.

Other stops will include Hamilton, Sault Ste.

Trudeau asked after their families and how they had been coping with the possibility of tariffs that he had said would have a devastating impact in Canada.

Canada has argued that since it is a staunch ally of the United States, collaborating on national security issues at home and overseas, its steel and aluminum can't be considered a security threat.

He said he began talking about steel with Trump at the G7 summit in Sicily past year, when he was emphatic that Canada poses no national security threat to the U.S. "We had your backs last week and we always will".

Sean Donnelly also says Canada's government must put resources in place to ensure that cheap steel is not diverted into Canada following Pres. Trump's decision to impose a 25% tariff on steel imports.

Canada and Mexico pushed back staunchly against steel and aluminum tariffs, with Canada in particular saying it'd be inconceivable to slap them on a close military ally under justification of a national security risk.

Trudeau, during a March 13 visit to Hamilton said since Trump's election in 2016 he has been talking about the benefits of Canadian steel and aluminum and arguing there is no national security threat to the United States.

But the USA government also wants to make sure cheap steel being dumped into North America by Brazil, South Korea, China and other countries doesn't enter the United States through a Canadian back door.

Trudeau later travelled to Regina where he toured the Evraz steel factory and reassured workers of the federal government's support for the industry.

"These are things that I highlighted to the president".

A steel tariff would be devastating for Sault Ste.

He noted that the integration of the Canadian and U.S. economies is particularly evident in the steel sector where $12-billion worth of the metal crosses the Canada-U.S. border annually.

Trudeau said the surplus of steel in the global market is not new and with American tariffs in place, some countries might try to ship their products to the US through Canada.

"(The United States has) now decided they want to get it done quicker, which is good", Trudeau told Matt Frolick, one of the workers who had a question about the trade talks.
