Living under bombardment in Eastern Ghouta

Forty-six aid trucks entered Eastern Ghouta on Monday for the first time since the offensive started, but had to cut short their deliveries and leave due to heavy bombardment.

Medical supplies were removed from Monday's convoy while it was still being loaded, Za'atari wrote.

Dujarric says Guterres is calling for "safe and unimpeded access" for convoys to deliver aid to hundreds of thousands of Syrians in desperate need.

The relentless attacks prompted France and Britain to request an emergency meeting of the top United Nations body behind closed doors on Wednesday to discuss the ceasefire's failure to take hold.

France condemns these violations of worldwide humanitarian law.

Last week, Russian Federation and Syria clashed with the US and its western allies over responsibility for the failure of a 30-day ceasefire to take hold in Syria.

He said after almost nine hours inside, the decision was made to leave for security reasons and to avoid jeopardising the safety of humanitarian teams on the ground.

Russian Federation and Syria have claimed that rebels are holding civilians captive in eastern Ghouta to serve as human shields, while rebel groups say civilians fear conscription or arrest if they enter regime territory.

The Syrian army, backed by Russian air force, has launched an operation to liberate the region.

Despite the ceasefire resolution, Moscow and Damascus have not halted the campaign to retake eastern Ghouta, arguing that the fighters they are striking are members of banned terrorist groups unprotected by the truce.

The An-26 jet crashed just 1,600ft (500m) from the runway as it was descending to land at the air base. The proposal echoes previous agreements under which insurgents, in the face of military defeat, were permitted to withdraw to opposition-held areas along the Turkish border.

After fresh air and rocket strikes by Syrian government forces killed another 46, State Department Spokeswoman Heather Nauert blamed Russian Federation for not reeling in the regime of its ally President Bashar al-Assad. It said the plane did not come under fire and that the crash was likely caused by a technical failure.

The U.N. said airstrikes and shelling in eastern Ghouta and the shelling of Damascus continued for hours while the convoy was unloading supplies.

The misery in a besieged rebel suburb of Damascus caused by the Syrian government's relentless push to crush the area is indicative of a "new phase of horror" in Syria's war, a top United Nations official has said.

The Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria has announced Tuesday that the next humanitarian convoy to head to Eastern Ghouta is scheduled for Thursday, March 8. Many residents are hungry.

Krzysiek said there was "no electricity so it was extremely dark and we had to go".
