Truck carrying Baarat falls into a drain, kills 25 people

The accident occurred on Bhavnagar-Rajkot Highway around 7.30 am near Ranghoda village. Other injured victims have been rushed to hospital.

Numerous injured were trapped under the twisted wreckage and had to be extracted by villagers and emergency personnel, according to Harshad Patel, the district collector.

He added the truck was carrying approximately 60 people. According to the police, the driver of the truck seems to have dozed off.

"Prima facie, the driver of the truck lost control due to drowsiness, leading to the accident", Superintendent of Police of Bhavnagar district, PL Mal told The Indian Express. Among those dead include Pravin and Prabha Vaghela, parents of the groom; Jasuben, groom's sister and Janiben, groom's grandmother.

The truck beds are often jammed beyond capacity by relatives and guests.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced compensation for the kin of the deceased and said that full treatment expenses of the injured will be borne by the government. The investigations have been launched into the matter by the concerned authorities.

India has one of the world's highest annual figures for traffic fatalities. "May those who have been injured recover at the earliest", he was quoted as saying in a tweet by the prime minister's office.
