Trump to American conservatives

Speaking to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), the USA president gestured to a picture of himself on display there.

The president also took credit for ending "the war on American energy".

"Remember, one person walked into a room, when he was supposed to go this way, and he said he was going this way, and he walked in and he went this way and everyone said, 'What happened?'" Trump said.

Trump, in his second appearance as President at the annual gathering of right-wing lawmakers and activists, spoke for over an hour and delivered a free-wheeling off-the-cuff speech that sounded like a return to the campaign trail.

A weekly recap of the top political stories from The Globe, sent right to your email. You know, I say every time I hear that, the wall gets 10 feet higher, you know that.

"It doesn't look bad, hey, we're hanging in", he added, giving a swirl to the cheering audience. Hey, we are hanging in, we are hanging in, we are hanging in there. A gust of wind blew aside a flap of his chevelure then.

"I'm thrilled to be back at CPAC with so many of my wonderful friends, and unbelievable supporters and proud conservators", Trump told the crowd before apparently catching a glimpse of himself on a video board.

"We have a very crooked media".

But if you look within, the president said, not all is as it seems. He smiled when the audience chanted, "Lock her up", in response to a comment about Hillary Clinton. They will put judges in that you wouldn't believe. "Boy, have they done things that are wrong".

The President also criticised Republicans, who did not support his agenda, referred to Arizona Senator John McCain, who has been battling cancer and voted against the Trump plan to repeal ObamaCare. Pence continued, assuring the crowd that the administration is working to "take strong action to make our schools safe and to give law enforcement and our families the tools they need to deal with people struggling with risky mental illness". Connecticut Chris Murphy, an outspoken advocate for more gun restrictions after the 2012 elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, said he expected to meet with White House aides next week.

Trump rhetoric ramped up as he strayed from the script and attacked enemies and fed off the emotion of the crowd.

He suggested "maybe 10 percent or 20 percent of the population of teachers" should have concealed weapons. He railed against "fake news", too, frequently chiding journalists at the back of the room. He said he only wants school personnel already trained with firearms to have guns.

That segued into a recitation of "The Snake" - a controversial campaign-trail classic where he read the lyrics of a song that details how a woman takes in a sick snake only to have the reptile then bite and kill her. Trump has used it as an allegory for letting in unsafe immigrants who would then harm US citizens.

"I don't want to be controversial so I won't use it name, okay". The song is about a woman finding a snake, taking it home, and being bitten by it later.
