Doctors perform 7-hour-long surgery; successfully remove the largest tumor

During the seven-hour surgery, doctors removed the massive tumor along with skull bone which had moved into the brain.

Doctors in India recently operated on what they say could be the largest brain tumor in the world, according to news reports. Pal, post-surgery, is recovering in the intensive care unit at the hospital and is in stable condition.

Nadkarni said there is a 50 per cent chance of Pal regaining his vision, and after further tests to be performed six weeks later, it will also become clear if the tumour was cancerous and would need additional procedures or not.

The reportsaid that Pal, who is a shopkeeper from Uttar Pradesh, a norther Indian state, had the tumor for the past three years but it started to grow at a very fast pace last year.

But the procedure was not made public as doctors were not sure until now if it had been successful.

Doctors said about 10 percent of the tumor was growing within Pal's skull, putting pressure on his brain and causing him to lose his eyesight; if not treated successfully, it could have caused neurological damage or paralysis. "We have not found any tumor as big as this", Dr. Nadkarni added. Doctors said pressure applied by the mass of flesh on Mr. Pal's brain led to loss of vision.

But his wife, Manju, told newspaper The Hindu that they had been told by doctors at three different hospitals in Uttar Pradesh that his large tumour was inoperable. "The part of the tumor within the skull was removed by making an opening in the skull", Nadkarni said.

Pal needed a transfusion of 11 units of blood and then spent three days on life support afterwards but has since made a good recovery.

"We had to cut open the scalp and remove the tumor", Nadkarni, the neurosurgeon, told the Hindu.

If the brain tumor is located in a place that makes it accessible for an operation, your surgeon will work to remove as much of the brain tumor as possible. As of now, the tumor was sent for biopsy and results are expected by next week.

The previous biggest brain tumor to be successfully removed was 3.08 pounds.

"The weight of a similar case reported earlier has been 1.4kg".
