Samsung's new 30.72TB SSD is breaking all the records

These drives are built using the company's latest 512Gb V-NAND technology - in a 64-layer array -, in addition to offering an industry-first 1TB NAND flash package and 40GB of DRAM. That meant more space inside the drive for storage. Using a 12Gb/s SAS interface, the PM1643 is quoted to deliver random read and write speeds of up to 400,000 IOPS and 50,000 IOPS, and sequential read and write speeds of up to 2,100MB/s and 1,700MB/s, respectively.

SAMSUNG HAS raised the bar again with a Solid State Disc (SSD) drive that crams a massive 30TB of storage into a standard format.

Not only has the new Samsung drive dramatically increased in capacity, its performance has improved significantly as well. Sequential read speeds are now stated as up to 2100MB/s, with sequential write speeds of up to 1700MB/s. Samsung touts that this is four-times the read speed and three-times the write speed of a typical 2.5-inch SATA SSD.

Samsung already started manufacturing initial quantities of the 30.72TB SSD model and is in plans to expand the entire enterprise SSD level later this year with 15.36TB, 7.68TB, 3.84TB, 1.92TB, 960GB and 800GB versions. "Samsung will continue to move aggressively in meeting the shifting demand toward SSDs over 10TB and at the same time, accelerating adoption of our trail-blazing storage solutions in a new age of enterprise systems", Han added.

Samsung also says that the design of its controller, DRAM packaging and associated software all contribute in the success of the drive.

Samsung has provided a new control architecture on its fresh enterprise SSD that integrates nine controllers from the previous high-capacity SSD range into a single package. Through Silicon Via (TSV) technology is used to interconnect 8 Gb DDR4 chips into ten TSV DRAM packages each totaling 4 GB. For example, Samsung's own 960 Pro SSD boasts 3,500MB/s reads and 2,100MB/s writes. That's created to give better data retention and recovery rates after sudden power failures, and an error correction code (ECC) algorithm for less storage maintenance. It also provides support for metadata protection and data retention and recovery after a sudden power failure. This new drive offers nearly double of what it had launched about two years ago, a 15.36TB drive which at its time was the highest capacity SSD.
