Mets, Vargas agree to $16 million, 2-year deal

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the New York Mets and left-handed pitcher Jason Vargas have agreed to terms on a two-year deal worth $16 million, pending a physical.

Vargas tied for the major-league lead with 18 wins in 2017 when he made the first All-Star appearance of his 12-year career. He faded in the second half, however, and the 35-year-old lefty had been among more than 85 free agents seeking a job as spring training opened this week. He returned to make three starts the following year.

That changed last season with the Kansas City Royals.

While other teams have been reluctant to shop, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson, perhaps sensing an opportunity for bargains, got busy filling holes and adding pieces late in the offseason.

Coming off a 70-92 season that followed consecutive playoff appearances, NY also signed reliever Anthony Swarzak to a $14 million, two-year contract in December.

Vargas should now slot in behind Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom and Matt Harvey in the Mets' rotation this season.

The Mets may still have one of the best young pitching staffs in baseball, but that doesn't man they can't use some help. He went 12-3 with a 2.62 ERA before the break and 6-8 with a 6.38 ERA from mid-July through the end of the season.

Jason Vargas was never a flashy pitcher during his time in Kansas City, but he had a productive career as a member of the Royals. Discounting those seasons, Vargas has averaged 188 innings per year since 2010. Over the next two months, Vargas had a 7.20 ERA, but he won four starts in September. His contract also includes a club option for 2020.
