Kasur rapist-murderer sentenced to death in Pakistan

An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan on Saturday found the accused Imran Ali guilty of raping and murdering seven years old Zainab in Kasur and awarded him four counts of death penalty.

Imran Ali, 24, has been handed four death sentences and life imprisonment for the murder of Ansari, whose body was found raped and strangled in a rubbish dump on 9 January. Her death brought rampaging mobs onto the streets in search of her killer.

Residents of the area have said the murder was the 12th such incident in a year. The court gave orders for sentencing Imran Ali Naqshbandi to death, four times.

"My daughter has gone, she will not come back, but I want to save daughters of other people", he said.

On Monday, the anti-terrorism court had indicted Ali and started regular proceedings after he refused to accept the charges levelled against him by the police.

The Prosecutor General of Punjab province, Ihtesham Qadir said the man was also convicted of terrorism charges.

He has 15 days to appeal but Ehtesham Qadir, the public prosecutor, the verdict can't be challenged because Imran has confessed to eight similar attacks. When the medical reports revealed that she had been raped before being brutally killed, it sparked a massive outrage in the country. The police finally nabbed the predator on January 23, 2018.

This massive search led to the arrest of Ali whose DNA sample matched with those of eight victims, including Zainab.

Police also identified that the killer was victim's neighbors and the CCTV footage of the same day showed the girl calmly walking with a man.

A separate life sentence, along with 2 million Pakistani rupees ($29,000) fine, was also handed to Ali for sodomy along with a seven-year jail sentence for concealing the body in a garbage heap.

The killing has reignited a debate about child protection in the district of Kasur, where police say a number of children went missing in 2015 after they uncovered a paedophile ring linked to a prominent family.

Almost 10 cases of child abuse a day are reported in Pakistan, according to Sahil, an organisation that works on child protection.
