ESPN, FOX aggressively pursuing Peyton Manning for broadcast booth

Both networks have Manning "atop their list" to be their primetime National Football League game analyst next season, Andrew Marchand of the New York Post reported Friday, citing sources.

Despite the overwhelming belief that Manning is the flawless color man and perhaps the next generation John Madden, he's been hesitant to make that official plunge.

ESPN is hurting after losing longtime analyst Jon Gruden to the Oakland Raiders.

With primetime openings at both Fox and ESPN, Peyton Manning has ample opportunity to start a career as National Football League broadcaster next season.

Former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is a logical candidate - he has plenty of experience in front of the camera, he obviously has plenty of football knowledge and he has a witty personality.

With that being said, the report does note Manning has never given the full vibe he wants to get into broadcasting.

After the success of Tony Romo in the CBS booth past year, it's appealing to have a charismatic former player who actually provides real, in-depth analysis.

Peyton Manning's next job could be in the booth. That would include a change at the play-by-play spot, which was manned by Sean McDonough last season to mixed reviews. Three internal possibilities are said to be Joe Tessitore, Steve Levy and Dave Pasch, but ESPN is still deciding whether or not these would be upgrades over McDonough. Matt Hasselbeck, who got to broadcast the Pro Bowl as a tryout for the "MNF" gig, would be one of the candidates. On the other hand, Monday nights have traditionally featured higher-quality games than Thursdays.

According to the Post, a new analyst might not be the only change to the Monday Night Football booth.

Over the course of 17 National Football League seasons, Peyton Manning threw for 71,940 yards and 531 touchdowns to just 251 interceptions-mind-boggling numbers that now represent the very target for all quarterbacks during regular season National Football League play.
