Ayodhya issue: AIMPLB says it sticks to earlier resolutions

After the meeting, the AOL said eminent members of the Sunni Waqf Board, All India Muslim Personal Law Board and others met Ravi Shankar and expressed support for an out-of- court settlement in the Ayodhya matter. It did not commit to a "dayto- day" hearing of the case. A packed courtroom awaited Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer to assemble at 2pm to hear the Ayodhya case.

"We are public spirited citizens from various walks from life and across the length and breadth of India who feel it is critical as a commitment to the foundational value contained in this Constitution, to intervene and inject urgency and a sane voice in this dispute", they argued in their petition.

The Supreme Court will hear the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case next on 14 March, as a "pure land dispute", it ruled on Thursday.

A three-judge bench of the Allahabad HC, in a 2:1 majority ruling, had in 2010 ordered that the land be partitioned equally among three parties - the Sunni Waqf Board, the NirmohiAkhara and Ram Lalla.

To another lawyer, who was representing 32 activists and wanted to implead in the matter since they were "very concerned about the outcome of the case", the bench said "applications for impleadment and intervention shall be considered at the appropriate time".

The petitions before the judges relate to the 2010 verdict of the Allahabad High Court in the title suit that had been pending for almost six decades. Whatever the decision, no party should view it as its victory or loss in the case, said the statement.

The Apex Court further said that the excerpts of vernacular books, which have been relied upon in the case, be translated in English and be filed within two weeks.

With pleadings in the case still to be completed, a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra directed the registry to complete all procedural requirements and asked the parties to bring on record all documents, exhibits, translations etc for the final arguments. The Bench refused to pass any order but indicated that never did the court intend to conduct a "day-to-day" hearing. Besides, there are more than 10 other appeals as well.

While suggesting that an out-of-the-court settlement is possible in the Ram temple-Babari Masjid dispute, Nadvi said the courts do not join people's heart as the verdict is always in favour of one and against the other.
