Why Africa shouldn't fear America First policy

President Donald Trump will fly into the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland, with the biggest ever U.S. delegation on Thursday to sell his controversial America First policy to world business leaders.

U.S. President Donald Trump arrives at the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland January 26, 2018. He told her "there's nothing that would happen to you [where] we wouldn't be there to fight for you".

Speaking to reporters, Trump attacked what he called the "false rumour" that he did not like May and said the pair were "on the same wavelength in every respect".

"I can tell you, Israel does want to make peace, and they [the Palestinians] are going to have to want to make peace, too, or we aren't going to have anything to do with them any longer", he continued, as he sat next to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

They discussed Iran and Syria, while May briefed Trump on the "good progress" in Britain's negotiations on leaving the European Union, Downing Street said.

Trump said, despite having praised the special relationship between the US and United Kingdom, a message he repeated once again on Thursday.

"We face the same challenges across the world, and as you say we're willing to go and to defeat those challenges and meet them", May said.

British officials have been dismayed by some of Trump's pronouncements, particularly a proposed ban on Muslims entering the United States and most recently when Trump rebuked May on Twitter after she criticised him for retweeting British far-right anti-Islam videos.

He promised that the USA would "no longer turn a blind eye" to unfair trade practices from other countries, such as intellectual property theft and other predatory behaviors that he said distort the markets and hurt workers in America and across the world.

The UK Prime Minister has asked her officials to finalise the details of Trump's visit to the UK as soon as possible.

A poll previous year found that 4% - roughly 2.5 million people - of Britain's population would protest a state visit by Trump.

"One thing that will be taking place over a number of years will be trade".

The trip comes as Mr. Trump is under global scrutiny for comments he made about "sh*thole countries" in a meeting on immigration with leaders in Congress, and for policies on trade and climate change that don't necessarily sit well with other world leaders.

Instead the President will make a less prestigious working visit, although the state visit invitation remains.
