Samsung Slammed With Guilty Verdict in Huawei Patent Lawsuit

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei had been looking for a way to crack into the USA market, and it thought it had finally found a partner in Dallas-based carrier AT&T.

AT&T spokesman Fletcher Cook declined to comment.

Huwaei highly publicized their expansion to the United States markets via promotions on their U.S. Facebook Page and their tweets.

A representative of Huawei said on Thursday that they believe the move to protect their intellectual property rights can help promote the healthy and sustained development of the science and technology industry. But according to The Wall Street Journal, the carrier backed out of the deal without any explanation.

"The problem is to the extent that the investment decisions are not being made on the ground by businessmen in China, but instead for strategic purposes by authorities in Beijing", Daniel Russel, diplomat in residence and senior fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute, and a former assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the US Department of State, told yesterday's 2018 South China Morning Post China Conference.

But that won't stop Huawei from selling the Mate 10 Pro online and at U-S stores, starting in February.

Originally, Yu was expected to announce the AT&T deal at CES, but it collapsed a day before his scheduled speech. "We've proven our quality, we've proven our privacy and security protection".

In response to the Chinese company, Samsung claimed RMB 161 million damage from Huawei.

Last spring, Huawei appeared to be making progress toward a deal with AT&T.

Huawei didn't quite have the CES 2018 coming out party for the US market that it may have wanted.

AT&T has been pressed to give up the deal after 18 US Senate and US Intelligence Committee members have signed a letter to regulators expressing concerns about Chinese companies' engagement in the US telecommunications sector.

Just like last time, Samsung is evaluating its options and hasn't disagreed with the ruling publicly. AT&T is the second-biggest carrier in the USA, and the collapse of the deal essentially shuts Huawei out of the United States smartphone market. In 2012, a congressional committee declared the company a security threat over its alleged ties with the Chinese government. Huawei said it complies with the law.

It's awkward timing for Huawei, which showed off the Mate 10 Pro at the tech show CES this week.
