GOP Retirements Mount as Rep Issa Bows Out

Republican North County congressman Darrell Issa today (January 10) announced that he will be retiring from his post in the 49th District this fall.

Issa's announcement comes two days after another California Republican, Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Edward Royce, announced his own retirement - leaving a nearby Orange County district amid a strong Democratic push for his ouster.

Issa's decision continues a string of GOP lawmakers who have chose to retire rather than take on what would be a hard re-election battle. After winning reelection by less than 2,000 votes in 2016, a number of political handicappers considered him one of the most vulnerable House incumbents in the country this election cycle. "Yet with the support of my family, I have decided that I will not seek re-election in California's 49th District".

Whether Issa's seat flips remains to be seen: although Hillary Clinton carried the district in the 2016 presidential elections, Inside Elections on Wednesday called the race for Issa's seat a toss-up.

Royce and Issa's districts are both in expensive television markets - further stretching national Republicans who are on defense across dozens of districts in the 2018 midterm elections.

In 2012, Issa launched one of the first congressional inquiries into the Benghazi attacks, which resulted in the deaths of two diplomats and two Central Intelligence Agency contractors during Clinton's tenure as secretary of state. But he became best known in Washington for turning the Oversight Committee into something like an Inquisition.

"In the 49th district, Democrats are locked in what is fast becoming one of the bloodiest primaries in America".

In 2016, Issa narrowly won his re-election bid against Democrat Doug Applegate, a retired Marine colonel who has said he will run again this year. "While Democrats fight with each other, Republicans will focus on fighting Democrats - and that's how we plan to win", Stivers said in a statement. Hillary Clinton won the district by almost 7 points in the 2016 election.

But the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee suggested otherwise. "We are truly grateful for his service", said Rep. Steve Stivers, chairman of the NRCC.
