Trump First POTUS Since Clinton to Attend Davos Economic Forum

Administration spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump was eager to attend the meeting of world leaders and business execs.

President Donald Trump, the populist self-proclaimed champion of trade protection and the forgotten people, plans to go to the annual meeting of world financial and economic elite in Davos, Switzerland, later this month.

Trump did not attend last January's conference - it conflicted with his inauguration.

Trump would be the first sitting USA president to attend the meeting of bankers, corporate chiefs, academics and investors since Bill Clinton in January 2000. Since becoming president, Trump has withdrawn from multinational trade agreements with Pacific Rim allies and Europeans and threatened to pull out of the North American Free Trade Agreement if talks with Mexico and Canada don't yield significant changes.

It is rare for American presidents to attend.

President George Bush - father and son - never came to the village in the Swiss mountains, and President Barack Obama also never appeared at the conference.

Bill Clinton attended Davos in 2000, the only president to do so, and he has been a regular attendee since.

The annual economic forum takes place in the resort town of Davos high in the Swiss Alps, bringing together more than 2,500 members of the global elite in what has been described as the world's most high-powered networking event.

The Global Economic Forum was founded in 1971 by Klaus Schwab, a business professor at the University of Geneva.
