Rep. Steve Alford quits posts after remarks about blacks

State Rep. Steve Alford, a 75-year-old Republican from Ulysses in the state's southwestern corner, apologized Monday for remarks he made Saturday during a public meeting at a hospital in Garden City.

He said: "I sincerely apologize to anyone whom I have hurt". The report stated that when Zach Worf, the president of Finney County Democrats - a political organization in Kansas, was talking about legalizing marijuana which could lead to financial gains for the city of Kansas, Alford replied that the latter should revisit history by taking a look at the 1930s. Alford suggested that the reasons behind the stiff ban on intoxicants at the time was basically to protect other Americans from the consequences of drug abuse by Blacks.

"Substance abuse is a blight on our society, and legalizing marijuana opens the door to harder drugs".

However, Alford's comments were found to be incorrect according a 2016 study conducted by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).

Aslinger was appointed the founding commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narctoics and campaigned for a stop to marijuana use because he said it caused crime and violence, using racist language such as "Reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men" and "There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the USA, and most are Negros, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers".

"I think that is outrageous", Democratic State Senator Oletha Faust-Goudeau said, the Topeka-Journal reported. Instead of seeing drug prohibition as a means to achieving racist ends, Alford took away that the minority races, blacks in particular, had been reacting to the drugs in a worse way than whites.

Burks isn't the only one sharing disapproval of Alford's comments.

"It is hard to believe that in 2018, anyone would support the discredited and racist policies of the Jim Crow-era", Brewer said in a statement to KSN TV.

Alford is the chair of the state's Child Welfare System Task Force and the House Committee on Children and Seniors. Ryckman said he and House Majority Leader Don Hineman would review the issue and relevant policies with staff. "I have seen firsthand how drug abuse destroys lives, even within my own family, and I remain committed to fighting the spread of addiction in our state".

According to the Kansas City Star, Alford has since apologized for his remarks, but also said that the whole thing isn't his fault, which kind of negates the whole apology thing. After repeated questions, he said: "And he came up and told me I'm a racist", Alford said.

Alford said somebody at the event called him a racist, but claimed, "I'm about as far from being a racist as I could get".
