Mavs Coach Rick Carlisle Trashes ESPN For LaVar Ball Article

National Basketball Association writer Sam Amico even reported Sunday several National Basketball Association head coaches plan to ask team media relations staffs to deny credentials to reporters who interview LaVar Ball. In talking about LaVar Ball and the media spotlight that's been placed on Lonzo's father, Kerr most definitely didn't hold back.

LaVar Ball has received his fair share of criticism lately. Things escalated when Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle torched ESPN for writing about Ball's thoughts on Walton and, since then, Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma and even Walton himself have been forced to weigh in on the entire saga. Not only that, Kerr went on to put ESPN on blast for laying off good journalists that actually focused on sports. It's not even news really, it's just complete nonsense. But if you package that irrational nonsense with some glitter and some ribbon, people are gonna watch. "I don't know who cares but people care and they must care or ESPN would be spending whatever they're spending to send reporters to Lithuania". "Don't worry about what people on Twitter are saying, don't worry about what this media outlet is saying or that one or your agent [is saying]. I said, 'Why do you guys have to cover that guy?' And they say, 'Well, we don't want to but our bosses tell us we have to because of the ratings, because of the readership.' Somewhere, I guess in Lithuana, LaVar is laughing". People are eating out his hands for no apparent reason. It doesn't matter if there's any substance involved in an issue. Do you know how many parents of my players are sitting at home going 'Why isn't he playing my kid?' And yet, we're sticking a microphone in his face because it apparently gets ratings.

"People like [former ESPN NBA writers] Ethan Strauss or Marc Stein are getting laid off, so again this is not a condemnation of ESPN".

At the same time, he notes, that's where the interest is; expecting media companies to not cover things that draw interest is not going to happen any time soon; instead, it's probably best to hope that coverage subsidizes the more important things news organizations do, whether or not they always have a big audience.

On Monday, Van Gundy threatened to not do pre-game meeting or in-game interviews with ESPN during the network's broadcast of a Pistons game on January 19th. saying their decision to give Ball a platform was "cheap (expletive)" and "a cheap shot" and said they "showed total disrespect".

LaVar Ball has become a media sensation. "It's not. It's a societal issue".

During an interview with John Ourand of SportsBusinessDaily.com in 2012, Skipper said of Tebow, "we didn't handle this very well".
